Chained Dog is Abuse!

Large Rectangle

There is nothing more frustrating than watching animal abuse that is socially acceptable. One great example of this is chaining your dog(s). What kind of life is this to be chained up in a small area with little to no contact from your beloved masters? I understand that not everyone has a fenced one acre yard for your pets. I also realize that if you do not have a fenced yard you better be walking that dog twice a day. There are countless examples of people adopting a puppy and once it grows up chain it to the back of the house toss out some food and water maybe and just ignore the dog. I find this absolutely disgusting. It really makes me question humanity as a whole. Why do some people feel no empathy to this creature begging for love and attention? You adopted this creature and yet you do not care for it?

When we first adopted a Max several years ago we live in a house without a fenced backyard. We purchased a cable that rotated on its base to use when he wanted out and we could not watch him all the time. I understand this situation I lived it. The difference is that we made sure it was temporary - we saved and fenced our yard. The longest Max was on the cable was no longer than one hour and he always had fresh water. Just because a dog is on a chain doesn't always mean abuse - if it is always on the chain that is abuse.

What can decent people do? Depends on the situation -

1) You can knock on the door as ask the people about the dog and its situation. Most people are friendly and will talk. Believe it or not most people chaining their dogs do not realize it is abuse. Some people are just "raised that way" whatever that means.

2) Contact your local humane society or shelter - some have programs for cheap fencing or resources that may help.

3) Take it to the local government - start a dialogue to ban chaining in your area.

Strengthen animal protections in your area.
