Kawal birds sanctuary, a very good example of Andhra Pradesh's biodiversity, is located in Jannaram, 60 Km. from Macherial of the Adilabad district. Spread in an area of 893 sq km this sanctuary is filled with varieties of flora and fauna. The forest is dry deciduous and contain variety of trees, shrubs and herbs. The main trees are teak forest and bamboo. This sanctuary houses different species of animals, birds and reptiles.
Visitors can spot animals like panthers, tiger, lions, pumas, jaguars, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, wild dogs , jackals, wolves, hippopotamus, hyenas, different types of monkeys like rhesus monkey, bonnet monkey, elephant, sambar, nilgiri spotted deer, barking deer and thiamine deer etc living in their natural habitat. The birds which are commonly seen in the sanctuary are peacock, kites, eagles, partridges, quails, owls, vultures, pied horn bills, painted strokes, cocktails, love birds, Budgerigars, Ducks, Grey Pelicans, Rosy Pelicans, kingfishers, Mynahs and pigeons. Jeep safaris and jungle tours are available there to watch birds and wild animals. Those who love adventure can stay there overnight. because as sun sets the jungle changes totally and the sanctuary takes a dangerous and scary shape. To experience this visitors can spend overnight in Forest Guest House in Jannaram.
The location is ideal for adventure as well as leisure travelers. The wild safari is a good experience with pleasant surprises.
