Silly Dilly

Dilly is a kitteh with an attitude. Her rear legs were paralyzed (note that she's on the second level of the cat tree, which she got to by herself thankyouverymuch), but she was pretty sure she was supposed to be out in the hall with the wandering cats. And she stood next to the door and howled such for a large portion of my cleaning this morning. She's at Niblet's in Benton's.

FYI. If you want to know more about Dilly, check out her Guardian Angel journal on Best Friends.

Buddy

Decided to spend time at Benton's today, the house for special needs cats. It was definitely a rewarding experience. Buddy's one of the reasons why. He's deaf in one ear and had been hit by a car which paralyzed his rear end. But he's awfully snuggly. He kept rolling in the red dust I was trying to sweep out of the enclosure.

18 Servals, 1 Sanctuary...

DESIREE
Female Serval
DOB unknown

Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 10/11/2009

Serval Rescue! An African Serval was limping along in the Arizona desert until she collapsed alongside a road.

She had almost completely given up the will to live. She was probably a pet or perhaps used in the hybrid breeding scheme that has become all the rage where Servals are bred to domestic house cats to produce Savannah Cat hybrids. The domestic cats are often killed in the process. The kittens sell for thousands of dollars, but when they mature they typically spray and bite and make awful pets. The hybrids are usually discarded by the time they are two or three years old.

This Serval was obviously abandoned and was placed by authorities at the Tucson Wildlife Center, a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to native wildlife. Lisa Bates-Lininger the founding president of the Tucson Wildlife Center said, "She was dehydrated and tired and just ready to give up. She may have died last night, but luckily we got her in. We got her emergency treatment, fluids for shock, and she's also missing a rear leg."

Despite 18 media posts including TV news in Tucson and a post on Craig's list looking for the owner no one admits to having abandoned this Serval to die in the desert. Thanks to some very generous supporters the serval was flown to her new permanent home at Big Cat Rescue where she is recovering well. Servals can live into their late teens and proper care is thousands of dollars each year. Her new 1,200 square foot Cat-a-tat had to be specially modified to accommodate her three legged hopping. It seems that she only recently lost her leg as she has a very difficult time keeping her balance. We are writing vets in the Tucson area to find out if any of them know what tragedy caused her to lose a limb and to see if there is any way to prosecute those who exposed her to such danger.

Big Cat Rescue, a non profit educational sanctuary, is devoted to rescuing and providing a permanent home for exotic (i.e. wild, not domestic) cats who have been abused, abandoned, bred to be pets, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats, and to educating the public about these animals and the issues facing them in captivity and in the wild.

The Kangaroo Family
Kangaroos, and their close relatives, vary greatly in size, ranging in weight from 500 grams to 90 kilograms. There are at least 69 different types (called species) of kangaroo. These species are found naturally in the wild only in Australia and New Guinea, although feral populations of some species have been introduced in New Zealand, Great Britain and Hawaii.

Recently, scientists have separated these species into two families (the Macropodidae and the Potoroidae) which together form a super-family known as the Macropodoidea (or macropods). The family Macropodidae includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and the forest wallabies of New Guinea. The family Potoroidae is made up of potoroos, rat-kangaroos and bettongs which are only found in Australia.

The best-known macropods are kangaroos, which is why the word 'kangaroo' is often used to describe any of the members of this family. We use 'kangaroos' in this text whenever these animals are being discussed in general.

Getting Around
Kangaroos of all sizes have one thing in common - powerful back legs with long feet. They are distinguished from other animals by the way they hop on these strong back legs. Only a few other small mammals, such as hopping mice, do this.

Hopping uses slightly less energy than four-footed running, but this advantage is lost at low speed. To move slowly, kangaroos balance on their front paws and tail, and then swing their hind legs forward in a pendulum motion.

One of the many odd things about kangaroos is that, on land, they can only move their hind feet together but when swimming they can kick each leg independently. Tree-kangaroos can move each hind leg separately when climbing. It is also interesting to note that, while several species of kangaroos have tails that can wrap around and carry nesting material such as grass and small branches, not one of the tree-kangaroos has the ability to grasp branches with its tail.

Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

Gandah Elephant Sanctuary was set up about 20 years ago as the transit center for elephants' relocation program. As the number of elephants at the center increases, some of them were not suitable to be relocated, as they are either too young or too old to survive in a new foreign environment. Slowly these elephants readjusted to the new surrounding and accept the presence humans in their daily activities. They became tourist attraction and started to draw large number of visitors especially in the weekends.

The sanctuary is located in the state of Pahang, about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. You will pass through the small town of Karak and Lanchang before you get into local road towards Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary. The signage will be visible from the town of Lanchang.

Visiting the Gandah Elephant Sanctuary is different from visiting your local zoo. This is becuase you are able to have a close contact with the animals. During the feeding time, you can join the elephants' trainers to feed them. In the afternoon, you can join the elephants for a swim in the nearby river. It is really a different kind of experience. The elephants are enjoying it too, sometime if they are in the mood, they will give you a spray of water from their long trunks.

The sanctuary is also playing the secondary role of educating the public and getting the support in the champaign to save the elephants. The visitors will be given a chance to view films on the plight of the elephants and the capture of the wild elephants meant to be relocated. Toward the end of the visit, the visitors are encouraged to donate to support the center.

Spending half a day in this unique place is a great experience. You can enjoy the activities closely related to the elephants and at the same time support the good cause of conservation. Most hotels in the capital can make arrangement for you visit.
