The Walrus Way

I've been posting a lot of Washington pictures lately so I thought I'd post a pick from my journey to Svalbard at the top of the world. Like a sack of potatoes, walrus just lay around on the beach all day in between their dives for mollusks on the sea floor. They're incredible to watch, but the excitement dies down after some minutes of watching couches with tusks sleep. Still, a fascinating animal and certainly a curious one.

This photo was taken on the island of Lagoya in the Svalbard Archipelago.

Cruelty Rescue Horses

These horses were reportedly seized in animal cruelty investigations. They now live basically wild on large acreages in herds, much as mustangs do in the American West.
I really enjoyed going to visit these animals, and the bison in the TallGrass Prairie Preserve, and the wildflowers we also found.

CAN OUR RAIN FOREST BE SAVED?

The Rape of the Rain Forests.

In a world plagued by so many problems, is conservation of the rain forests that important? What do we stand to lose if they disappear?

ONCE upon a time, a broad emerald belt girdled our planet. Trees of every kind made up its fabric, and broad rivers laced its surface.

Like a huge natural greenhouse, it was a realm of beauty and diversity. Half the world's species of animals, birds, and insects lived there. But although it was the most bounteous region on earth, it was also fragile—more fragile than anyone imagined.

The tropical rain forest, as we now call it, seemed immense—and almost indestructible. It was not. The rain forest first began to disappear from the Caribbean islands. As early as 1671—ten years before the dodo bird became extinct—sugar plantations swallowed up the forest on Barbados.* Other islands in the region went through a similar experience, a foretaste of a global trend that has accelerated in the 20th century.

Today tropical rain forests carpet only 5 percent of the earth's surface, compared with 12 percent a century ago. And every year an area of forest greater than the size of England, or 50,000 square miles [130,000 sq km], is felled or burned.

This appalling rate of destruction threatens to condemn the rain forest—along with its inhabitants—to the same fate as the dodo. "It's dangerous to say the forest will disappear by a particular year, but unless things change, the forest will disappear," warns Philip Fearnside, a rain-forest researcher in Brazil. Diana Jean Schemo reported during October last year: "Data in recent weeks suggest that the burning going on in Brazil this year is greater than what has occurred in Indonesia, where major cities have been smothered under blankets of smoke that spread to other countries. . . . Burnings in the Amazon region are up 28 percent over last year, according to satellite data, and 1994 deforestation figures, the most recent available, show a 34 percent increase since 1991."

The Original. In 1917, All Star sneaker gave the world a blank canvas. At first it played basketball and then Rock & Roll and then everything else. It went along with athletes and artists, experimenters, rebels, visionaries and now, even after everything it has been, it remains anything you want.

Quince Blossoms, detail 4
photo to canvas
Thank you for all views and comments. They are always very much appreciated!

Quince Blossoms, 1878, oil on canvas, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia. The painting shows quince blossoms in a large Italian earthenware pot next to a Japanese fan with goldfish. Also shown are two Chinese bowls. The textile is Near Eastern. This combination of multi-cultural elements is characteristic of the decorative effects employed by follows of the aesthetic movement where the art was to have no purpose except Art for Art’s Sake.

Charles Caryl Coleman (1840-1928) was an expatriate American artist who called the island of Capri his home for close to 60 years. He was born in Buffalo, and studied art there and in Paris under Thomas Couture between 1859 and 1862. He returned to the United States, serving in the 100th Regiment of the New York Volunteers in the Civil War; shot in the jaw, he was discharged in 1863. By 1866 he was in Rome; in 1870 he converted a former convent into his villa (Villa Narcissus), which became a center for other expatriates and followers of the aesthetic movement. “In 1910, in the latter part of his life, Coleman fell ill and was not expected to live; yet, he did and carried on for almost another two decades, playing the role of the eccentric artist, presenting himself in outlandish dress to house-guests, throwing parties and generally having a good time right to the end. He is buried on Capri.” [ ac-support.europe.umuc.edu/~jmatthew/naples/coleman.html ]

He did close to 300 paintings in a variety of styles and a variety of genre covering portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and works depicting classical architectural elements. His landscapes featured the scenery around the Bay of Naples, including a series on the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, The still lifes depicted decorative elements, an amalgam of items from numerous cultures, often with a touch of the exotic and Oriental. He crafted art frames and the one used for his friend Elihu Vedder’s “Cup of Death” is attributed to him [see www.flickr.com/photos/universalpops/6816949790/ ]. He also did the frame for this image, Quince Blossoms, but I foolishly neglected to include it in the photo. Coleman did some murals for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and some designs for the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York for Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company.

Yosemite National Park (see map) is closer to my "standards" in term of landscape than the arid but so beautifull parks in Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

The light on the "El Capitan" (the name of that rock) is very special in this park the morning.
The lighting, contrast, staturation and hue of the photo was adjusted.

A good souvenir in my mind.
