The Walrus Way
wildlife animals
I've been posting a lot of Washington pictures lately so I thought I'd post a pick from my journey to Svalbard at the top of the world. Like a sack of potatoes, walrus just lay around on the beach all day in between their dives for mollusks on the sea floor. They're incredible to watch, but the excitement dies down after some minutes of watching couches with tusks sleep. Still, a fascinating animal and certainly a curious one.

This photo was taken on the island of Lagoya in the Svalbard Archipelago.

Wildlife Conservation - Protecting The Animal Specie

Mother Nature has bestowed upon us lush landscape, endless water bodies and a magnificent variety of flora and fauna. It is impossible to imagine a world without such wonderful endowments. To keep the natural cycle going, it is extremely essential to conserve the priceless elements of Planet Earth. However, it is disheartening and disappointing to see the beautiful animal species being endangered and threatened to life. We are losing the most beautiful creation of God only because of human carelessness and their irresponsible behavior.  Animals are becoming extinct and vanishing away, the reason for which is loss of appropriate habitat, human interference, pollution and many such more causes. Wildlife conservation has become a critical issue of national importance.

Thankfully, the governments and national authorities have now become sensitive about this issue and many positive steps are being taken to protect and conserve the beautiful fauna of the world. The wildlife comprises of all those non-cultivated and non-domesticated animals that live in their natural habitat. Mammals, birds and reptiles all come under the category of wildlife. However, due to irrational human activities, the lives of these innocent creatures are being threatened. Their natural habitat is being destroyed because of which it becomes difficult for the wild animals to survive. Keeping aside the natural reasons for death, humans have played a significant role in disturbing the habitat of wild animals.  India is home to almost 60-70% of the world’s biodiversity and it is an unfortunate fact that some of the wonderful wildlife species have become extinct now!

Considering the frequent loss of Nature’s essential creation, it has become all the more important for us to concentrate on wildlife conservation.

The practice of conserving the species of wild animals focuses on preserving their natural habitat by initiating varied laws and campaigns. Governments across the globe have come together to make their contribution in this concern. Several wildlife conservation projects have been initiated that emphasize on protecting and preserving the fauna of all kinds. Non- frivolous use, Regulated commerce in wildlife and public trust doctrine are some beneficial steps taken by the North American government in view of environmental conservation. It is not only to maintain the natural beauty of our planet, but also to sustain the natural cycle of life and evolution that we need to conserve and protect the innocent wildlife species.

My friend Kiki

Kiki - along with two other red foxes - for some reason seems to like my company. While I never have arrived home to find them napping (or bathing themselves, or rolling in the dirt) in my front yard, nearly every time I'm out working in & around my garage & one or more shows up (which is most days), they end up watching me for a bit, then sitting, then cleaning themselves, then (usually) having some fun rolling around, then curling to take a nap, using their tails as pillows.

I truly do not understand why they tend to do this only when I'm around, though I certainly am not complaining - I've grown quite fond of all three. Maybe they think I'm trustworthy enough to sound an alarm should trouble arise or something.

There have been a few times when they've ventured closer to me than about 15 feet (4.5 m), at which point I've felt it necessary to politely shoo them off. As much as I genuinely would love to pet that beautiful fur, first & foremost, well ... they're wild animals, & as nice as they appear there's no guarantee whatsoever they wouldn't bite my hand off, though probably in the most adorable manner possible. The other main reason I don't want them getting too comfortable getting too close is because, well ... we're kind of wild animals ourselves, & there's no guarantee whatsoever - if they felt comfortable coming right up to humans - that no human wouldn't kick their adorable little skulls in. I just don't want to feel potentially responsible for such a mean & unadorable act.

So I remain content with them using my front yard as something of a safe zone, happily watching & taking waaaaaay too many pictures.

I actually love this photo so much, I took quite a few. I have a new 50-300mm zoom and I used it on the Safari at Animal Kingdom, I didn't need it though...this Rhino was so close to the car, we was driven off a little early as the driver was getting worried it was going to charge. What is a better place to go to get a Wildlife shot than Animal Kingdom haha? I have so many more which I will be putting up later

Mountain lion track
wildlife animals
We found fresh tracks of a small cougar. They are common around here but the animal itself is not often seen. This is a front track, which is wider than it is long. Counting from the bottom, toe #3 leads, which is usual in mountain lion tracks, as is the absence of nail marks. Toe #4 is usually notably large, as it is in this track. The interdigital pad has two lobes, unlike a canine track, which has one.
This was part of a set of tracks that led to the base of a Douglas-fir, and stopped. Another set began at the tree, going in the other direction, which told us that the lion had probably climbed the tree, and later came down and left, and was not sitting directly above us, which would have been cool, but alas... the elusive cougar.

Canadian National Symbol

The importance of the Beaver in the development of Canada through the fur trade led to its designation as the national animal. It is depicted on the Canadian five-cent piece and was on the first pictorial postage stamp issued in the Canadian colonies in 1849 (the so-called "Three-Penny Beaver"). As a national symbol, the beaver was chosen to be the mascot of the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal with the name "Amik" ("beaver" in Ojibwe). The beaver is also the symbol of many units and organizations within the Canadian Forces, such as on the cap badges of the Royal 22e Régiment and the Canadian Military Engineers. Toronto Police Services, London Police Service, Canadian Pacific Railway Police Service and Canadian Pacific Railway crest bears the beaver on their crest or coat of arms.

Status: Endangered
From Durrell factsheet: - "The worldwide captive population of western lowland gorillas is in the region of 1000 animals kept at some 150 different institutions, and thanks to cooperation between organisations, it is genetically healthy and continues to increase steadily. Tragically, however, if the situation in the wild does not improve soon for the gorilla species as a whole, through the protection of their habitat and the acceptance of alternatives to bush meat, the only way that these incredible apes will be able to share the planet with us may be as captives."

Winter Wildlife

Winter is hard for wildlife as the days are short and food is in short supply, especially in the Antarctic. However, some animals are adapted for living in the coldest habitats in the world.

The artic hare is adapted largely to polar and mountainous habitats. Its distinguishing physical traits include shortened ears and thick white fur. The hares usually dig holes under the snow to keep warm.

The artic hare

The Artic fox or the white fox is commonly found throughout the Artic tundra biome. This species has thick, white coat which keeps warmth and helps camouflage in winter.

The species has a system of countercurrent heat exchange in the circulation of paws.

Desert cottontail rabbits are commonly found throughout North and South America. They are noted for their fluffy “cotton” tail.

A baby harp seal can be distinguished from hundreds of others by scent.

Musk-oxen are well-known for the strong odor from males and for its thick, shaggy coat. The coat keeps them warm in the Artic.

During the summer, snowshoe hares’ fur is rusty brown and turns white during the winter for camouflage.

The King Penguin ranks second only to the Emperor Penguin in terms of weight. Their distinctively large flippers help them dive deep in the icy ocean. With estimated total population of 2.23 million pairs, King Penguins are common in Antarctica, South Georgia, and other temperate islands of the regions.

The Siberian tiger is one of the three remaining species of tigers. It is the largest living felid. It is typically 5–10 cm taller at the shoulders than the Bengal tiger.

The Emperor penguin is the largest of all living penguin species. They reach 122 cm in height and weigh up to 45 kg.

Desert Bighorn Sheep in Grand Canyon National Park D_3939

Among the largest hoofed mammals in the park, the desert bighorn sheep, Ovis canadensis, are relatively scarce along the rim, preferring the rocky slopes and side canyons of the inner canyon. These animals roam the entire depth of the canyon from the rims to the Colorado River,

foraging on plants and negotiating the steep, rocky terrain with ease. They do not shed the long, curved horns that continue to grow throughout their lives. Like many mammals of the region, they are likely to be found near reliable sources of water: springs, seeps, or pools of summer rain. NPS photo by Mark Lellouch.

Never approach wild animals. Photograph all wildlife from the safety of your vehicle. Use telephoto lenses and observe quietly. It is dangerous, and illegal, to feed wild animals in a national park. Violators will be fined. Wildlife can become dependent upon handouts and lose their ability to hunt and forage. Such animals lose their fear of humans. They can become aggressive and bite, kick, or gore. Many are struck by cars while searching for handouts. Help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed or approach wildlife.

Wildlife Photography Techniques: How To Photograph Animals By Surprise

Photography has been around for more than a century and our topics will never cease. There is portrait, landscape, wedding, and wildlife photography just to name a few. One of the most rewarding styles of photography centers on wildlife. It may take you several hours before finding the perfect picture and capturing it, but the reward is more than worth the wait.

Wildlife photography is perhaps the most difficult in the profession. You have to have the time, inclination, and of course the camera. Most wildlife shots are captured using a telephoto lens because the animal will not walk near you. Every once in a while you will be able to capture the fox, elk, bear or other animal as it comes through the woods in your path, however most of the time they are yards away and elusive.

Wildlife photography doesn't wait for you to happen a long and snap a photo. You need to immerse yourself in the site you choose your camera at the ready, and set for the light of the day. Most automatic cameras work great on the preset for those who are just learning to take wildlife photographs. Photography has always been about the moment and the best photographers can catch the moment with a speed and agility of the animal they are capturing.

Start with small subjects when you begin your foray into wildlife photography. Practice on your pet. Let them roam naturally and see if you can capture the wild and crazy moments on film without the photograph ending up blurry. All great photographers have studied and practiced. They also use more than one shot. Making sure your camera has a quick shutter speed will help you take more than one shot as your move with the animal. When you have the subject in your site you need to follow it while focusing and then quickly snap as many pictures as you can before they move out of site. This technique is known as panning. Rather than the subject coming to you, you follow the subject.

When you have mastered your pets you can begin to explore the outdoor world of wildlife photography. Some of your subjects will be standing still and this is another practice technique. Be aware of the lighting and placement while trying not to disturb the animal. It is most easy to get a squirrel when they are intent on eating or foraging for food. If you stay silent and walk carefully you can often get pretty close.

If you are choosing a larger subject such as a deer or bear you will want to stay far enough away to get the shot, and not draw attention to yourself. Bears are dangerous creatures, but they can be photographed if you use common sense and don't tread upon their territory. Wildlife photography and thus the photographers have a code of ethics when attaining the perfect shots. You will want to follow these ethics for your safety and the animals.

Wildlife photography is a waiting game for the perfect picture to sprint across your viewfinder. It takes patience and a lot of practice, but the reward of having a family member or friend go, " where did you get that photograph? I have got to have one," will sweeten the deal.

Wildlife Gardening

Wildlife Gardening

Encouraging wildlife into your garden

It’s lovely when you see a hedgehog crawl out from beneath a pile of logs, or a bat emerge from your self built bat house just after dark.

By encouraging wildlife into your garden it not creates a feeling of happiness but also continues to provide important habitants for animals. Below are some tips and ideas to keep up the wild side of your garden.

Planting trees is the most apparent means of creating habitants for mammals and birds; by planting native tree species this will provide food all year round for insects and birds. The tree will offer shelter depending on its size all types of creatures will benefit, and quite often create their home beneath or within the tree.

Planting shrubs that produce flower, berries and seeds at different times over the year will not only make your garden colourful and fruitful but also provide a tasty treat for insects.

Build a pond, ok so not necessary build one, but make one, if your garden is relatively small like mine you can always use an old sink or bath if your lucky enough to have one lying around, place the makeshift pond into the ground with one side sloped down to make it accessible for creatures to climb in and out off, the damp bogginess will beckon frogs, toads, newts and dragonflies. Add some small rocks around the pond for cover.

Bird and bat boxes are great for supplying shelter and safety, out of harms reach from ground crawling predators.  Place your box at least 2m off the ground on a tree or wall and enjoy watching them.

Bats will go where there is food so by building a pond, planting a hedgerow or planting night-scented flowers will all contribute to attracting bats to your garden.

Bird tables become very popular to birds during winter when they find it harder to find local foods, place sunflower seeds, unsalted peanuts, or chopped fruit onto a feeding station in your garden, it may take a few days for the birds to take to the food, but when they know its there the feed will be eagerly taken.

If you have the space then try and leave a section of your garden over grown and undisturbed, place a few logs in there, and leave them to rot, hedgehogs are likely to see this kind of environment as a perfect home for hibernation.

How We Can Help Animals of the Wildlife During Winter

It's summer, and the wildlife is surely doing just fine this time of the year. But it's a totally different story during winter. Winter can be a difficult time for wildlife. The food supply of many animals disappears completely or is buried by snow. Animals survive winter in different ways. Some species migrate to warmer climes; others hibernate. But for those animals that struggle through it, winter can be a cold, miserable time, and many of them die unnecessarily.

The widespread destruction of hedges and woodland, the drainage of ponds and marshes, and the clearing of land in the country have altered animals' habitats, causing many of them to depend on backyards for food and shelter, especially in winter. Rather than rely on preservation groups to help the animals, there are simple things that everyone can do that will enable animals to survive winter. To be specific, there are two basic things we can provide to these animals during the harsh winter time: food and shelter.

Providing food:

Feeding birds is an easy way to help them through the winter. They will eat commercial bird seed or almost any type of table scraps. But once you begin feeding them, the birds will come to depend on the food you provide. Also, when you place food on the ground, be sure to leave it out in the open, away from cover where a cat may be lying in wait. Many smaller birds prefer to feed from bird tables. Nuts, raisins, fruit, and shredded coconut are highly nutritious for birds and are readily available in stores.

You should also provide the birds with fresh water, especially when their natural supplies are frozen. Fill a shallow bowl and place it near the bird table.

If you have a birdbath, you can float a plastic ball in to keep the water from freezing.

Badgers, foxes, rabbits, and deer can be fed from yards in more rural areas. Squirrels, too, often visit backyards to take food from bird tables.

Even if you do not have a yard, you can still help. Whenever you go for walks, take food with you. The animals will appreciate extra food during the winter.

Providing shelter:

In addition to providing food and water, you can also make your yard more welcoming to wildlife in a number of other ways. Large bird houses placed in high trees will provide roosts for owls and other birds. Undisturbed compost will provide a resting place for hibernating grass snakes, and a woodpile will provide a secure space for toads and many insects.

Check out this list of seventeen animals and what we can provide to each one of them during winter:

1. Bats - Bat boxes on the eaves of the house or in trees.

2. Blue jay - Fruit and mealworms.

3. Cardinals - Seeds and live bait.

4. Chipmunk - Seeds and nuts.

5. Common frog - Damp, undisturbed areas and ice-free pond.

6. Common toad - Dry, undisturbed vegetation.

7. Deer - Fresh hay in sack.

8. Fox - Table scraps and cat food.

9. Grass snake - Leaf litter and dry ditches.

10. Gray squirrel - Nuts and bird table food.

11. Ground feeding birds (magpies, starlings, blackbirds, and crows) - Household scraps such as cheese, pork rind, and fruit; fresh water daily, especially when natural supplies are frozen.

12. Lizards - Logs or stones where they can hibernate.

13. Owl - Large roosting box.

14. Perching birds (woodpeckers, sparrows, etc.) - Bird table with peanuts, sunflower seeds, mixed seeds, fruits, berries, and bread. If you have the time, you can make a bird cake from a mixture of flour, water, corn, millet, meal, nuts, and canary seed bound together with chicken grease and allowed to harden. It can then be broken into pieces and scattered on the lawn or strung up from the bird table.

15. Rabbits - Some winter vegetables left in the ground or fresh greens put out near gaps in the fence.

16. Raccoon - Daytime sleep sites such as holes under sheds.

17. Slow worm - Holes in ground and undisturbed areas of vegetation for hibernation.

One of the best ways to help attract birds and mammals to your backyard is to provide suitable roosting sites. You can buy or build birdhouses; their design and position will determine which species they attract. Some birds prefer open-fronted boxes. Smaller birds prefer the security of a box with a small hole, which may be lined with metal to discourage woodpeckers. Larger boxes may attract owls.

Fortunately for the animals out there in the wild that may be in distress during winter time, there are a lot of things we all can do to help them.
