Based on archeological records, it has been shown that a major domestication center was located in the Near East. The question remains, however, if cattle were only domesticated in the Near East prior to their expansion into Europe and Africa or were they domesticated in different locations independently?

It is believed that the cows that were found in Africa, Europe, and India, were descendants of the domesticated aurochs of the Near East. Two types of cattle evolved from these species the humped Zebu and the humpless European Highland. Based on further data, it is believed that not all breeds of cow were descendants of the Near Eastern cattle, nor was there a single place where all of them were first domesticated. Instead, it is likely that cattle were actually independently domesticated in what we now know as India and Pakistan and perhaps Africa as well.

By the time 3000 B.C.E. Had rolled around, domestic cattle were already very well established in ancient Egypt. They were used for farming and played an integral role in both their religion and culture. Paintings found in ancient Egyptian tombs show that cows were a source of meat and milk and worked in the fields. In addition, the cow goddess Hathor, was a very powerful deity who represented creation, motherhood, and love.

We don't realize how lucky we are to be able to choose a wolf stuffed animal from the vast array of soft toy choices, given there was a time when, in many parts of the United States, the real thing had all but disappeared. To this day, wolves are very misunderstood animals so it's a good thing the same can't be said about the wolf stuffed animal.

By the time the 1970s rolled around, in the lower 48 United States, wolves had been hunted to extinction in order for both ranchers and farmers to protect their livestock. Given the wolves were the predators, there was nothing else to prey upon them except humans. Finally, after 30 years without them, researchers felt that in order to control rising populations such as cougar and elk, wolves needed to be reintroduced.

Fourteen wolves from the Canadian Rocky Mountains were transferred to Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1995. The next year, another 17 wolves joined them. From the original 31, more than 1,000 healthy wolves are descendents and 150 of those still live inside the park boundaries. The question researchers had back in 2006 was: why were the wolves only dispersing at a rate of about 6.2 miles one tenth of their usual 62 mile disperse rate? The puzzle was finally solved by a team of mathematical biologists from the University of Alberta.

According to Dr. Mark Lewis, co-author of the study when the wolves travelled far distances in their new environment it was easy for them to lose track of their mates, and the further they travelled the less likely it is for them to find a mate. Ultimately, the wolves recolonization process was significantly slowed when there was the reduced possibility of them finding a mate. Despite the fact that the wolves were adapting well to their new home, researchers weren't so much concerned about their slow dispersal as they were puzzled by it all; as long as they are dispersing into uncharted territory, we expect the population to continue spreading at the slow rate - about 6.2 miles per year, said Dr. Mark Lewis.

Displayed at Mill Cottage, built in 1866, Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The toys belonged to the six Bishop children who lived in the house - Sidney b1869; Ethel b1871; William b1873; Amy b1876; Geoffrey b1887 and Myles b1890.

These two wooden arks are typical examples of flat bottomed, straw work arks, made in Germany in 19th century (usually the Erzgebirge region). The decoration is of fine veneer of multi coloured slivers of wood looking like straw. The carved wooden figures represent Noah, his wife and sons. The animals (originally many hundreds, in pairs like in the Bible story) were made by first turning a piece of wood to make a doughnut shape with the outside surface representing the animal. The 'doughnut' was then cut into sections to make many versions of that particular animal. They then had individual tails and ears etc added and painted.

These toys were designed to be played with only on Sundays (because of their Biblical theme) when the more religious families in the 19th century frowned on playing with toys or having fun on the Sabbath.

While it might seem a little silly to give a young child extra large stuffed animals, the fact of the matter is, they will eventually grow into them, much like they will the clothes that were bought for them that were too big. No matter the age of a child, they are able to appreciate what plush toys have to offer and that includes the ones that are above average in size.

Both the toys and the play of babies, toddlers, and older children are marked by a distinct boundary. Newborn babies, for example, follow a specific individual pattern in that as they age they learn all the multi-skills toddlers and children previously developed: sucking, chewing, seeing, smiling, babbling, listening, talking, understanding, grabbing, stroking, sitting, rolling, standing up, and walking. All of these baby developments last for a period of about two years at which time toddlers gain a much better understanding of themselves and are able to interact with the environment and people that surround them.

As Sigmund Freud discovered, babies play begins very simply. It's not manufactured toys that babies first play with, but rather, it's with their mothers when they begin to stretch out and explore. Following that, it's usually the rattle and/or small soft toys that are the first to be introduced. As far as history goes, rattles are among the oldest toys and are the first toys babies use. Despite the change in the rattle's design and material over the years, its function has remained the same. Even before they acquire the skills needed for holding on to them themselves, as rattles are shaken in front of them, babies will listen and watch them.

By the time a baby is six months old, they have started to develop hand-eye coordination.

While it's often taken for granted, it's really a complex accomplishment - one that helps the child move on to other developmental stages. At this young age, a child is also quite taken with the element of surprise. 'Peek-a-Boo,' for example, or 'This Little Piggy Went to Market," are all popular games which include the elements of anticipation and surprise. Toys that offers some of the same, are wooden jumping jacks which includes such imagery as animals and hunters. These toys have been made for some 300 years in the Grödner valley near Nuremberg; when the figures are hung up, and the cord which is attached to all the limbs, is pulled, the arms and legs move up and down.

Glove puppets are yet another type of toy which furthers imaginative play in a child; they can develop their very own character right alongside their owner. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sooty the bear and Sweep the dog were quite popular glove puppets in Britain – they were spin-offs from Harry Corbett's Sooty television series. Life-like puppets of monkeys were also made by Schuco – the German firm. In addition to that, the industry went on to develop the glove and finger puppet in which the part of the glove that covers the palm of the hand, becomes a container for the animal family – one on each finger.

Soft toys, such as extra large stuffed animals, are both touchable and stimulating to babies; from the first soft balls which were made from leather to fabric to the modifications such as the wobbly clown, and then first manufacturing of soft toys by Margarete Steiff in 1902, in a child' life, these have all been firm favorites. Extra large stuffed animals have gone on to become a child's long term comfort toy- a fitting role no the matter the child's age.

The good thing about plush stuffed toys is that they never go out of style. It doesn't matter what year it is, or even what century, plush stuffed toys have been and will continue to be with us well into the future.

When the first teddy bear was created by Margarete Steiff in 1902, it is hard to imagine that that little bear that could, would turn the world of plush stuffed toys on its ear. Even today, teddy bears are hailed as the world's most popular toy. It has been loved by children and adults alike for more than 100 years. What started out as a humble nursery companion, has now become a valuable collector's item that dominates the soft toy industry. A growing number of adults have confessed to loving their old teddy bears and have been prepared to pay increasingly large amounts of money for vintage bears, particularly those made by Margarete Steiff.
