Get Involved in Animal Welfare

I will be the first to tell you that that state of animal treatment in the United States and the world is poor at best. There are just too many bad cases and troubled situations for one person or one group to deal with. That is absolutely correct. Nothing will change without a movement. Action by ordinary people on the grassroots level. We cannot depend on government bureaucracy and underpaid law enforcement officials to take the lead on animal welfare issues.

We can all start very small. Start by making sure your friends and family are taking proper care of their animals. I never understood why people would adopt a dog then stick it in a tiny pen on the far corner of the property. Only to interact with the dog once a day to fill its bowl with food. We believe that pets are family! Both sides lose in these types of scenarios. The people do not get the full benefit of quality time and play with an unconditionally loving pet. The pet is doomed to live out its life in a cage purgatory where it gets only minimal social stimulation.

The next steps are to donate, volunteer, community awareness. Donate to your local no kill animal shelter, Spay/Neuter organizations, and the like. These organizations work diligently in your community everyday to make the lives of animals better. The real beneficiaries of these organizations are the people of the community. Sadly most do not receive any government funding. They rely solely on donations of people like you and me and the occasional grant.

Volunteer at a no kill animal shelter or other animal welfare organization. The only resource these places need more than money is volunteers. They need help taking dogs to adoption events on the weekends, walking dogs in the kennels so they become used to human contact and do not jump all over a perspective adopter because they are never let out of their pens.

They need help gathering evidence in animal abuse and neglect cases. Local law enforcement seldom acts. If they do it is almost always too late for the animals.

The last and most important is awareness. Just keeping your eyes open to possible abuse cases. If you drive by a house with a dog in bad shape, contact the authorities and your local humane society. Talk to your friends about it. Awareness leads to education. The more we know the better we can be. We owe that to our furry friends. Contact us and tell us your ideas to help animals.

Horse Racing Welfare

Human beings have a natural instinct for speed, as do horses. So they love races. If you watch the developments occurring in various fields closely, you can find out that the aspiration for more speed was there behind every invention.

Even in sports also the swift moves were always catching attention of the viewers. Thus in a fast world, speed has become the symbol of life. The love for speed helped to carve out many sports. One among them is horse race. It has been considered as a sport of elite class people. It involves a lot of money and is affordable for the rich people only. But many ordinary people are living on this sport. The horse keepers, trainers, helpers etc are making a lively hood on this sport. But the most important figure in this sport is horse itself. Keeping a horse in good healthy condition is not so easy. Regular medical checkups and application of horse wormers are necessary for that. Wormers are given to kill the intestinal worms and certain other parasites which live on the food consumed by the horses.

Horses meant for race should be kept in good conditions. It should be protected from the extreme climatic conditions and also from the scorching sun in the summer and also from the rains. So the sheds meant to keep race horses should be well constructed. Besides, the food also should be of good quality. It should contain all necessary nutrients to keep them fit and also to develop a natural immunity power. Besides a regular medical check up is required to see whether there are any problems that may affect the health of those horses. A regular use of horse wormers is advisable.

Wormers will help to eradicate all affected worms and parasites from the body of the horse.

Horse racing is really an interesting sporting event. But it’s good to point out about the pain behind the bringing up of horses. Experts are required to do this perfectly. A lot of care should be taken while giving training also. So more than a sporting event, it is a good profession which helps thousands of people to live on it. A horse has been mingled with several people. So there are a lot of chances to get affected. As in the case of most of the pets, horses too mainly affected with digestive problems. This is mainly because of the food it takes. It is not possible to be vigil always about the food it takes. A number of worms and other parasites may enter the body through these foods. So it is better to apply horse wormers regularly. It will help you to keep the horses in healthy conditions to some extent. Wormers are really playing an important role in taking care of horse races.

Embarking Upon a Career in Animal Welfare

If you wish to embark upon a career in animal welfare then you must be prepared for hard work and continuous dedication. This particular field of work has always been popular and certainly seems to be an attractive prospect in the sometimes gloomy job market.

This author had worked in the animal welfare sector for several years and I finished my career as an RSPCA animal collection officer. How I got there was through hard work and flexibility.

When starting out, one of the best things that you can do is to volunteer. Animal welfare hospitals or centres always need volunteers due to the financial demands that they have. From dog walking to cleaning out kennels to volunteering to drive animals to veterinary surgeons, there are a whole host of volunteering opportunities available. Do not forget the all important charity shops that fund many centres. These shops always need volunteers, and although not glamorous it is exactly how I started my career. To work in this way, without pay at first, is a good indication of your dedication. It will also allow you to see the not so glamorous sides of animal welfare.

One must be flexible as well. Even though I wanted hands on experience with the animals I was offered my first paid job in animal welfare as a charity shop manager. This allowed me to see the behind the scenes working of the charity and also put me in contact with inspectors and animal collection officers who became valuable in my further career. Always remember the ultimate goal is to serve animal welfare and being part of it in any capacity should inspire and uplift you.

As for qualifications, who you are is more important than what you know.

Obviously any animal welfare qualifications or certificates that you gain will be invaluable, yet it is also important to generate "people skills" and so being able to present yourself to the public professionally and in control is a vital skill. Courses that involve conflict management are extremely useful and will show future employers how you will be able to deal with problems efficiently and calmly.

The emotional side of animal welfare is one that must be taken into consideration. Unfortunately there will be times when difficult decisions will need to be made for the ultimate welfare of the animal and exposure to this side is important early on to prepare you for the future. You could perhaps offer to volunteer in an veterinary centre or animal clinic.

Another most valuable attitude is one of positivity and expectation. Do not allow others to put you off from your goals. Ultimately it is YOU who decide your fate and it will be your dedication, enthusiasm and hard work that will pay off in the long run.

Animal Welfare Vs Animal Rights

When we talk about animal welfare the first question which comes in mind is why we need animal welfare. A friend gave an interesting reply that it is necessary because the animals provide us milk and meal as food and skin for shoes.

Another said that the animals provide us amusement and we should save them. Yet another friend argued that in our country, which is having the largest cattle stock in the world, the animals are very useful in agriculture and transport. They provide us with jobs, food and income. Another friend feels that animal welfare is necessary as human beings; we should have compassion and sympathy towards all the creatures.

As the animals are useful to us we have a duty to care for them. It is a pity that often the animals are not provided with enough food, shelter, medical care and hygienic conditions. They are very often exploited and overloaded for economic gains.

Many men do not pause for a moment while killing the animals for sports and amusement. There may be various viewpoints, but it is certain that animal welfare is necessary for ecological balance and in maintaining the natural food chain. The animals are integral-part to our living world and environment.

Like human beings, the earth is their habitat and, like us, they have a right to live. It is our duty to protect animals and their welfare should be our concern. Animal welfare is not just the responsibility of the governments and organizations, but it needs participation of everyone. Traditionally the rules for animal welfare had been a part of our religions. Every religion in India preaches non-violence and protection of animals.

But during the recent times, it is sad to see that we are loosing respect for the rights of animals to live.

The man had been ruthless and cruel towards the animals. Hunting has been a popular sport, which results in loss of life of innocent animals. There are laws and regulations which control hunting and cruelty towards animals. These are not sufficient. There is a need for a public movement and change in our attitude towards the animals. We need to have a heart full of love for the animals if we really want animal welfare.

Gandhiji, all his life, carried forward the message of non-violence and love for animals. This has been our heritage and soul of all the religions-Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.
Whenever we see an animal, let us remember the message of lord Mahavira:
“Live and Let live.”
Living together can be a sure way towards, the animal welfare.

Why Chiller Hire for County Shows is Essential to Animal Welfare

Cattle farmers sometimes hire chillers (large, powerful cooling machines) to keep their saleable produce stored at the right temperature. In spring and summer, organisers of agricultural events, such as big county shows and smaller regional shows, also rent chillers, to keep valuable cattle cool in the holding pens and the main arena. It’s not that surprising when in the UK, individual cattle can be worth over £1,000, depending upon the cow’s breed, age and productivity and prime breeding cows reach six figure sums (according to the Livestock Auctioneers Association.).

Agricultural events – ‘shop windows’ for cattle farmers

In the UK the agricultural shows and events calendar gets busier each year. The Devon County Show, The Royal Cornwall Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, The Royal Norfolk County Show (and many others) is where the business of farming is showcased. Each show is a shop window for the county's locally produced food and drink.

Along with thousands of members of the public; farmers, herdsmen, retailers and other professionals use the shows as an opportunity to see the best dairy and beef livestock, equipment, products and services available in the UK market. Farmers promote their own businesses there: showing their cattle, seeking to impress, to network and make connections in the industry. All this can often result in sales on the day and boosted trade later.

It is essential, therefore, that their cattle look and feel healthy. One of the biggest threats to this is heat stress.

How cows can be affected by heat

Whilst cattle do have a fairly large ideal environmental temperature range, cows that are simply too hot can:

be unable to produce milk (high-producing cows are most sensitive to heat stress because of their high feed intake)
have difficulty in becoming pregnant
be susceptible to heat stroke, which can sometimes cause death. While cattle dying from heat stress is more common in the USA and South America than in the UK, it is still a threat here every summer [particularly in more enclosed spaces], and something farmers need to protect their cattle from

With all this, it is understandable that hiring chillers from a good chiller hire company, to keep livestock cool, is an option that agricultural event organisers (and the cattle farmers themselves) are grateful for.

 About chiller specialists

Rented chillers are basically massive air-conditioning units – incredibly powerful cooling machines that provide volumes of cool air that air conditioning units simply cannot. Some chillers possess the capacity to cool large-sized buildings, such as huge office blocks and high-production dairies, etc. What is good about portable chillers is that they can be rented temporarily (for both indoor and outdoor use).

So, at a county or regional show, organisers can cost-effectively lease chillers for the event’s duration only, without having to heavily invest in chiller units that will basically be unused for a great part of the year (creating an additional problem of where to store them in between events and the event season, which runs from May to September).

The best chiller rental specialists have depots all over the country (stocked with a full range of modern chiller models). This means agricultural event organisers anywhere in the country can have the most suitable chiller units they need delivered quickly, from a local supplier.

Farmers must have confidence in event organisers

UK cattle farmers are already among the most efficient in the European Union, with breeding, feeding and management improvements seeing average milk yield per cow increasing year-on-year over the past decade, according to industry trade publication, The Farmers Guardian. The dairy and beef industry is still highly competitive, however. County and regional shows are an essential part of every cattle farmer’s business. But if there is a risk of heat stress to their herds at the shows, farmers will understandably be reluctant to attend.

For event organisers being able to source temporary chillers from a good chiller hire company quickly, easily (and surprisingly affordably) means they can virtually guarantee that the right environmental conditions for livestock will be provided on site.
