There is no denying that a pig stuffed animal can compare in all around adorableness to the teddy bear; with its pink plush fur, curly tail and overall pleasing expression, children and even adults find themselves collectors of all things pig related - including the pig stuffed animal.

 

If you have ever wondered what an animal feels and just how happy they really are, look no further than a 2010 study on pigs conducted by experts from Newcastle University. The School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development have successfully shown that depending on how content a pig is, it will mirror what its mood is like. All that to say, pigs are indeed capable of complex emotions and they are directly influenced how they feel by the conditions they are living in.

 

In the study, conducted by Dr. Catherine Douglas, researchers set out to determine if pigs were feeling optimistic or pessimistic about life in general based on the way they were living. The pigs were taught to show how they were feeling with the use of a an apple attached to a note on a percussion instrument and a kind of dog training 'clicker' that had something attached to it which was not as pleasant [as the apple] – a rustling paper bag. Half the pigs were put into an environment in which they were given more space to roam and the freedom to both walk and play with 'pig' toys in fresh straw. The other half of the pigs were placed in a smaller area that contained no straw and just one interactive toy. A squeaky noise was then played to see how the pigs would respond.

 

The pigs living in the better environment took an optimistic approach to the sound they had never heard before and went on to approach it with the expectation they would get the treat (the apple).

The other pigs, living in the area which was not as pleasant, took the opposite approach and were wary of the noise thus did not attempt to come forward for the treat. The reactions of the pigs is similar to the way humans feel and will react when approached with something ambiguous. For example, if your boss calls you into your office on a day when you are feeling particularly stressed and out of sorts, you will likely conclude that you have done something wrong. On the other hand, if your day has been a positive one and you are called into the boss' office, you might think you will be greeted with praise and, even a raise.

 

The study done on the pigs is part of an ongoing project to understand quality of life for animals on a farm with the intent of improving animal welfare and animal lives in general. One of the United Kingdom's leading experts in pig welfare says the results of this latest study need to be further "refined and validated so it could be used to help scientists determine what is really important to the pig for its well-being."

Despite their unusual looks, or perhaps because of them, a camel stuffed animal is one popular soft toy. With their signature humps (depending on the species, it can be one or two), both children and adults are fascinated with these odd looking animals, making a camel stuffed animal the soft toy of choice when it comes to exotic plush.

Contrary to popular belief, camels cannot go days and days without water. The idea that water is stored in a camels hump, comes entirely from myth. A camels hump or humps (the Bactrian species has two) are a fatty deposit that gives the animal energy when they have a lack of food. When their energy is low due to little or no food, the hump will shrink and get soft and consequently flop over to one side. After a few days of eating, the hump returns to its normal position firm and upright. Water, is actually stored in a camel's bloodstream. They are capable of losing forty percent of their body weight before they become distressed and can go from five to seven days without drinking. In about 10 minutes, a camel will consume 22 gallons of water an amount that most animals would not be able to handle. If they have food that will provide them with moisture of some kind, their water intake will not have to be so substantial.

The teeth, mouth, and stomach of a camel is such, that they are able to eat plants that other desert animals cannot digest. When eating plants and/or branches with thorns, for example, a camels tough rubbery mouth will not sustain any damage. In addition, they have 34 sharp teeth which enables them to bite just about any kind of tough food. Like cows, camels have three stomachs and do not chew their food; it is swallowed first, partially digested, and then chewed again later as cud.

During prehistoric times, it is believed that camels crossed over the Bering Strait to eventually evolve in North America. They eventually became domesticated and of the 500-700 camels living in the Gobi desert, only a small population is still wild. Today, domesticated camels only make their homes in Asia and Africa. At one time, some were introduced to Australia and as a result, there are still a few feral camels living in the wilds there. In the 1800s, an experiment was conducted in which camels were introduced to the North American desert, but it turned out to be unsuccessful.

A camel stuffed animal- whether it has one hump or two - will never need food or water. It will however, require the love of someone who is willing to put in the time to care for it not unlike they would with the real thing. Like a camel stuffed animal, camels are quite pleasant and friendly.

Cougar Stuffed Animals

One of the lesser known soft toys in the wild cat family are cougar stuffed animals. While lions and tigers get all the attention simply because they are more widely known, there is something to be said for the elusive cougar. Like lion and tiger plush, cougar stuffed animals are just as lovely and just as snuggable.

Cougars are knows by many names besides cougar including: mountain lion, puma and panther. No matter what you choose to call it, it remains the same cat. Cougars came to be known by so many names because people in different countries referred to them in different ways. In North and South America, early Spanish explorers called it leon which means lion and gato monte which means cat of the mountain today's popular term mountain lion is derived from this. The name Puma comes from the language of the Incas which is what they called cougars. It is possible that the world cougar came from the word cuguacuarana which is of old South American Indian origin and eventually went on to be shortened to cuguar (and was then spelled differently). Typically solid colored cats are called panther's so this name was applied both pumas and black jaguars. Each of the cougars 'other' names is correct, but puma is the one most often used by scientists.

In Southern California, cougars are referred to as mountain lions. They are a solitary cat most of the time except when they breed and when they have cubs. They live in large home ranges which can be anywhere from 30 to 125 square miles. It is conceivable that some cougars will share parts of their range and as is the case, they will occasionally come into contact with one another. A home range is the place in which a cougar spends the majority of its time both living and hunting. When bad weather is in the area, cougars/mountain lions will take cover in caves, rocky crevices and in thick brush. A specific den is reserved by mother's for her cubs which is the place in which she will give birth and raise the cubs to about six months of age, at which time, they are old enough to leave the den and hunt.

Cougars are known for their powerful hind legs which gives them tremendous jumping ability. Like a cheetah, they have a flexible spine which gives them the added bonus of being able to move around things quickly and change direction very fast. Despite these skills, cougars are known as ambush hunters which means they hide from their prey and then surprise it with an attack at close range. Depending on where they live, they will dine on raccoons, deer, pigs, hares and squirrels. Larger cats have even been known to take down elk and moose.

Huskies are a hard-working and strikingly beautiful breed of dog. They will take advantage of someone that is not their consistent pack leader by becoming strong-willed and naughty.

At the heart and soul of a Husky is a sled-dog, which is something that needs to be taken seriously when considering raising this breed. Huskies get bored very quickly and as is the case, they can be very destructive if they are not given the right amount of mental and physical exercise. Like with any breed of dog, Huskies require a great deal of time and energy. They also do not do well when left alone for any length of time and are prone to damage things as a result.

The giraffe has been described as "magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, and colossal in height." They are rather unusual animals when you think about it and as is the case, it's no surprise to find that giraffe stuffed animals are gaining in popularity simply because they're different.

In Africa, some ancient cultures revered the giraffe so highly that the animal has been found etched on cave paintings and in prehistoric rock. At one time, the giraffe was an unknown animal outside of Africa and because of its unusual looks and shock appeal, it was often sent as a diplomatic gift to other countries. One of the first known recordings of such a thing was in 1415, when a giraffe was presumably sent from Kenya to China.

The giraffes scientific name Giraffe Camelopardalis, is derived from a mistake in which the animal was thought to be a cross between a camel and a leopard. It's the tallest living animal on the planet standing up to 19 feet; its unique 'design' has adapted to be able to reach vegetation that is otherwise inaccessible to other plant eating animals. A giraffe stuffed animal is extremely lifelike in design with a body that is solid and a neck that is usually soft and pliable. While cuddliness may not come to mind when considering the purchase of a giraffe stuffed animal over a plush teddy bear, they do have a certain coziness about them nonetheless. While a shark stuffed animal might not be your first choice of soft toy for your child, don't be surprised if that's the one they really want. After all, a shark stuffed animal comes complete with teeth (the plush kind) if you choose to go with the Great White species, making it all the more authentic as compared to a less imposing type of soft toy a teddy bear, for example.

A recent study published in the Journal of Zoology, claims that great white sharks uses geographic profiling, an investigative technique applied to the hunting patterns. Researchers discovered that while sharks do kill for food, when they do, they stalk their prey while remaining out of sight. Geographic profiling is the first time such a technique has ever been used on a marine species. 340 great white shark attacks were observed of Cape fur seals, located off Seal Island in False Bay, South Africa. With the use of radar charts, researchers were able to plot the attack sites so they could look at the distribution of the encounters and also take note of where the attacks began and ended. Normally, the frequency of the attacks should have been related to how dense the population of the prey was with sharks lying in wait where most of the seals gathered. The results of the study, however, showed that was not the case. Instead, sharks were positioning themselves close to 328 feet from the island at water depths of about 82 feet. It is believed that the rational behind this technique was that it struck just the right balance for the shark to be close enough to attack but still not close enough to be detected [by the seals]. Large adult sharks also had very specific points from which they anchored themselves which is where they would launch their attacks repeatedly. Younger, smaller sharks, however, did not show the same focus.

Researchers believe the differences between older and younger sharks' attack strategies was based on refined hunting skills which they could only learn over time - older sharks would have the advantage and as a result could dominate younger sharks and keep them away from the best hunting areas. When it comes to hunting for seals, sharks must be very smart in their attack strategies as seals can inflict serious damage on them.

Big Bear Stuffed Animals And Different Types Of Bears

Big bear stuffed animals require real commitment from their owner; with these large, oversized plush toys, if they're not quickly regarded as treasured members of the family, who knows what they might do. They can be a finicky bunch, these big bear stuffed animals, so make sure they receive far more attention (and for much longer) than any other toy.

Different species of bears can be found living in North America, Asia, and Europe. In South America, the only species found there is the spectacled bear. In Africa, bears could once be found in the north in the Atlas Mountains, but they are now all extinct. Australia also has no bears despite the fact that most people think Koalas are members of the bear family; koalas are marsupials, which means they are an animal with a pouch (like the kangaroo).

The American black bear is the most common of all bear species. On average they weigh about 300 pounds although some males clock in at 900 pounds. While black bears are mostly black, they can range in color from white to cinnamon to reddish brown. They are excellent tree-climbers and often do so to escape danger on the ground. At one time, they could be found living throughout the continent but now make their homes in mountain or wooded areas in Canada and the Rocky Mountains, South in the Appalachians, and in the Great Lakes region of the Adirondacks.

Through many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, brown bears can be found. There are different sub-species which make their home in North America and Eurasia. The coloring of the brown bear can range from light brown to almost black and they weigh anywhere from 500 to 1700 pounds. Like all bears, their main source of food is plant material like leaves and berries, but they are also know for their love of salmon which make their way up northern rivers to spawn. If the opportunity presents itself, they will also eat elk and moose.

The grizzly bear can be found living in the Rockies from Alaska to Colorado. Their coat is a brownish-yellow with distinct grizzled (or silver-tipped) outer hairs hence the name 'grizzly.' Adult male grizzlies can reach lengths of 8 feet and weigh as much as 500 pounds while females can weigh anywhere between 350 and 400 pounds. Unlike black bears, the grizzly can't climb trees.
The Kodiak bear, which can only be found off the coast of Alaska on Kodiak island, is a very large brown bear. In fact, they are bigger than the grizzly; they can stand up to 10 feet tall and weight up to 1,500 pounds. Like the grizzly, Kodiak bears love salmon and given they live in an area that is a spawning ground for the fish, they get plenty of it, catching up to 15 in an hour.

Like the Kodiak bear, polar bears can only be found living in specific regions in this case, near arctic waters. It's main food source is the seal but they will also feed on whale and walrus carcasses. Polar bears can grow to lengths of 11 feet and weigh as much as 1,600 pounds. They are excellent swimmers and use ice floes (broken pieces of ice) to travel and swim between. With webbing between their toes and broad paws that act like snowshoes, polar bears are adept both in the water and on land.

Like the different species of bear, big bear stuffed animals are a diverse lot. You can choose traditional colored bears such as brown, black, and white, or, you can go with something a little more over the top like a blue or pink bear. If your interest is to stick as close as possible to the real thing, your big bear stuffed animals should be the same type of coloring you would see [on a bear] in the wild.

Toy Stuffed Animals

Some of the biggest, brightest, and best playthings ever created can't hold a candle to toy stuffed animals. Silly putty was fun for about about a minute but after dreaming up every possible way in which the clay could be shaped and formed, that was the end of that. Etch-a-sketch was neat but you more wondered how the silvery display of rods that made the pictures, got inside the plastic box to begin with. The slinky had its moments but when it finally took a misstep and tumbled down the stairs in a heap of twisted wire, all interest was lost. Lego blocks taught us fine motor skills, but at a certain age, those motor skills eventually surpassed the allure of the blocks. Through the eyes of Barbie, we could envision what our futures might be like especially when Barbie was introduced to the public with a long list of careers. But, as we got older, Barbie just wasn't what she used to be and like many of our childhood toys, she was given away. Toy stuffed animals, on the other hand, are one of those things that come along but once in a lifetime; that special teddy bear that you painstakingly took the time to choose from the over abundance that sat on the store shelf. He had just the right face and just the right softness and most important of all, you fell in love at first sight.

That teddy bear you carefully chose, continued to be there for you when times were sad and when they were joyous. He was also the shoulder you cried on when you scraped your knee on the pavement or were rushed in for emergency surgery on your 25th birthday. He was the one that listened to you tell him that your best friend was having a 6th birthday party and for some reason you were not invited. And, he also listened when, at 30, your boyfriend broke up with you. Yes, toy stuffed animals are timeless.

You may have received your very first toy stuffed animal before you could even walk or talk. You may not have even known entirely what it was except that it always seemed to be with you in your crib, in your car seat, in your high chair, and, perched on a shelf watching over you as you took a bath. As you got older, those toy stuffed animals may have been buried on a shelf or in a box in the back of a closet somewhere. But, you never gave them away knowing that one day, when you were in need, you would dig out those toy stuffed animals once again and they would be there for you as they always were before.

Yorkshire Terrier Stuffed Animal

Yorkshire Terriers originated in the mid-19th century around the industrial heartlands of northern England. They were bred by working men, for whom a large dog would have been difficult to keep, but who wanted a lively companion. Their probable forebears are the old Black-and-Tan Terriers, the Maltese, and the now extinct Clysedale Terrier. From each litter the smallest dogs were selected for breeding and the Yorkshire Terrier gradually shrank to the proportions we see today.

Yorkshire Terriers or Yorkies, as they are more commonly referred to, make an ideal pet for someone that is not partial to big dogs. For those unfortunate enough to have allergies to dogs, a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal is likely the next best thing to having one. In addition, if your child has a plush toy collection that consists of different dog breeds, adding a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal to the already existent assembly of canines is a must.

Even though Yorkies are tiny, don't be fooled by their small size. Despite being so little, they are surprisingly domineering and make very good watch dogs. Amazingly, Yorkies excel in some of what are considered to be large dog breed sports such as flyball, agility training, and tracking. Although Yorkies only weigh up to seven pounds, they have huge personalities that have won over many a persons heart. They are loyal, brave, clever, and full of energy and are completely oblivious to the fact that they are so small.

Another benefit to having a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal over the real thing, is that the daily maintenance that is required of the breed, becomes a non-issue. A Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal is low on the care scale in terms of clipping its nails, and grooming its coat, which is something that is a frequent requirement with the breed. With a Yorkies long silky coat, it's necessary to enure that knots and tangles don't form, thus almost daily brushing is a must.

Given there is some debate over whether or not Yorkies make good family pets, having a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal instead, takes the worry out of whether or not it will get along with young children that may be in the home. Like most small dog breeds, Yorkies are not partial to roughhousing, thus many breeders do not recommend them for anyone with very young children. Young kids typically don't quite know their limitations when it comes to pets in the home, thus, unless properly supervised, unintentional accidents can happen; with a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal, this will never be a concern.

Cow Stuffed Animal Toys & Facts

Cows are one farm animal that children most easily recognize. It's one of the first animals they both learn to identify on sight as well as how to make its signature moo sound. Is it no surprise then, that a cow stuffed animal (or two) is among some of their most cherished plush toys?

The beauty of a cow stuffed animal is that it is such a non-threatening plush toy, much like the teddy bear. It does not bring with it the fear that a dragon or dinosaur plush might. With its large doe eyes and pleasing expression, a cow stuffed animal is about as tame as you can get when it comes to plush toys for children, especially very young ones.

It is estimated that there are about 920 cow breeds in the world. Domesticated cows today, are likely descendants of wild ox-like animals called aurochs, that once roamed areas in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The majority of scientists have agreed that aurochs' became domesticated around 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Based on archeological records, it has been shown that a major domestication center was located in the Near East. The question remains, however, if cattle were only domesticated in the Near East prior to their expansion into Europe and Africa or were they domesticated in different locations independently?

It is believed that the cows that were found in Africa, Europe, and India, were descendants of the domesticated aurochs of the Near East. Two types of cattle evolved from these species the humped Zebu and the humpless European Highland. Based on further data, it is believed that not all breeds of cow were descendants of the Near Eastern cattle, nor was there a single place where all of them were first domesticated. Instead, it is likely that cattle were actually independently domesticated in what we now know as India and Pakistan and perhaps Africa as well.

By the time 3000 B.C.E. Had rolled around, domestic cattle were already very well established in ancient Egypt. They were used for farming and played an integral role in both their religion and culture. Paintings found in ancient Egyptian tombs show that cows were a source of meat and milk and worked in the fields. In addition, the cow goddess Hathor, was a very powerful deity who represented creation, motherhood, and love.

As a child gets a little older, they might find it very interesting to learn about where their cow stuffed animal finds its origins in the real animal it represents. While still quite young, however, their main concern with their beloved plush cow is how much they love to snuggle up with it. And, as a result, all the history can come later.

A whale stuffed animal is a wonderful substitute for a teddy bear. After all, whale stuffed animals are large, and soft and plush just like the teddy. In addition, while not the traditional choice for a plush toy, they are still a welcome addition to any plush toy collection.

Whales live in every ocean in the world. They belong to the cetacea species which are mammals that live in the water. Whales are descendants of animals that lived on land for millions of years who then returned to the water. They are close relatives of both dolphins and porpoises and are unusually large. In fact, the blue whale is considered the largest animal on the planet. Scientists have identified two types of whale which have numerous sub-species within each group: baleen and toothed whales. Baleen whales have a specifically designed jaw structure that allows them to filter their food out of water. Toothed whales have teeth which are used to kill their food.

Even though they resemble dolphins (though a much larger version of them), the most familiar whale of all the species that exist is the killer whale. While killer whale's are part of the toothed whale group, they are members of the dolphin family. Like all whales, killer whales are warm-blooded mammals that breath air. There are three species of killer whale including: Resident Killer Whales, Transient Killer Whales, and Off-shore Killer Whales. What sets the three apart are their physical appearances, social behavior, food, and dialects. In online stores there are killer whale stuffed animals that don't necessarily belong to any of the discernible species. All that's really important, especially for a child interested in having one, is that these whale plush animals are large and cuddly. Like the whale they're designed after, the killer whale stuffed animals have black and white coloration and a streamlined body shape. They also have the requisite pectoral and dorsal fins.

Killer whales use their fins for a variety of 'tasks;' their round pectoral fins are used for steering and stopping and their dorsal fin acts as a hydrodynamic element to help stabilize them in the water. Their dorsal fin is the most prominent and not surprisingly (given how big they are), can grow up to six feet on a male killer whale. Female dorsal fins, on the other hand, are three to four feet and are sometimes curved.

Some male killer whales can live to the ripe old age of forty, though it's conceivable that they could go to up to sixty years of age. Females, typically live longer and have been known to live until they're eighty. A whale stuffed animal will never age in the true sense of the word it'll be around for as long as you want it to be.

As an animal lover, even at the best of times, it's hard to resist any one species whether it's domestic or wild. The same can be said about plush toys, especially for those that collect them or simply just love them like they do animals. When it comes to a golden retriever stuffed animal, like the real thing, it is an irresistible soft toy thanks to its welcoming face, soft golden fur, and all around pleasing demeanor. A golden retriever stuffed animal is a must for any animal lover and/or plush toy admirer.

The earliest known origins of the golden retriever breed, began in the 1800s in Scotland. Lord Tweedmouth, a British Aristocrat, was the one that developed it. On Scottish estates, hunting was a way of life, providing both sport and sustenance, and as a result, Tweedmouth, along with other British Lords, looked to develop the best hunting dogs possible for upland game birds. A practical game dog, however, was not the only requirement; attractive looking animals were also a necessity. The end result was the golden retriever breed which was both a skillful hunter and beautiful.

The breed that was the foundation of the golden Retriever is now extinct the Tweed water spaniel. But, through the years, other breeds were crossed with Tweed water spaniel which resulted in such breeds as red setters, Labrador retriever's, bloodhounds and Newfoundland's (although these dogs then, were quite different from the breeds of the same names today). It was through this cross-breeding that the golden retriever got its exceptional character and skill including scenting ability, strong prey drive, and easy-going temperament. By the time the 1900s rolled around, the golden retriever had developed into outstanding hunting and retrieving dog. It also became well known for its signature features a golden coat and sweet disposition.

The golden retriever's we know today, are all descendants of the original companion hunters of the 18 and 1900s. These are now dogs that walk quietly while heeling and/or sit patiently until they are told to retrieve fallen game on land or in the water. Golden retriever's need to be a strongly driven dog so they can find and retrieve animals while with hunters that walk. In addition, they must have a soft mouth so when they pick up and deliver game, it does not become damaged. They also need to be confident and friendly so they can easily adapt to working with groups of hunters and other dogs.

A golden retriever stuffed animal will never have to worry about getting its coat wet while retrieving game in the water, nor will it ever have to wait patiently to be told it can move forward. In fact, a golden retriever stuffed animal will never be a working dog at all, but rather, a loving, constant companion for those lucky enough to have one.

Giraffe Stuffed Animal & Facts

Despite their incredible size and height, giraffes are graceful animals that roam open grasslands in Africa. They are the animal which often draws large crowds at zoos and animal parks because of their unusual looks. As is the case, a giraffe stuffed animal usually ends up in the car ride home.

Not surprisingly, giraffes are the tallest mammals in the world. Just their legs are six feet taller than a humans. They can stand up to 19 feet and weigh as much as 2,800 pounds. Their long legs give them the ability to run up to 35 miles per hour over short distances and over longer distances, they can cruise at a comfortable 10 miles per hour. One of the great things about some of the giraffe stuffed animals on the market, is that they can be purchased in such large sizes, you get the pseudo feeling of what it's like for them to be that tall. Online stores have a giraffe stuffed animal that is 5 feet tall! They also have others which are 4.5 feet in height that also come with sound. A young child standing next to one of these spectacular giraffe stuffed animals is sure to be a hit, albeit an overwhelming one given their size.

Like their bodies, a giraffes tongue is also large. At 21 inches in length, it helps them with retrieving their food from branches. Hundreds of pounds of leaves are eaten by a giraffe on a weekly basis and they have to travel for many miles just to find enough food.
