Details and History
The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This circa 1860 Langenheim, Loyd & Co. image shows docks and ships at the Philidelphia Navy Yard one year before the onset of the Civil War. This appears to show a steam sloop in the foreground and a sail-less steamship behind. Though this ship is unidentified, it seems to have similarities to the larger USS Roanoke before conversion to an ironclad. Contemporary hybrid sail/steam ships for which images have been found include the steam sloop USS Pawnee, the screw steamship USS Mohawk (steamship Caledonia), and the screw gunboat USS Wyandotte.

In the US, brothers William and Frederick Langenheim introduced Steriopticon ("Magic Lantern") technology in 1850. The brothers, early pioneers in photographic processes, were also the first to produce stereo views domestically.
