I might have overdone the vignetting, though I tried to keep it tasteful.

The Plush Stuffed Animal And Teddy Bear Artists

The plush stuffed animal is made up of such an enormous amount of soft toys, it's difficult to know which one to choose. If you're a first time buyer and are feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of having to wade through a throng of plush stuffed animals, have no fear there's always a fall back. And, that, of course, is the teddy bear. Just look for the one with the most pleasing face, the softest 'fur' and the one that is the most squishable when you hug it. Once you have found 'the one,' you will see that the decision wasn't such a daunting one after all.

Over the course of the last two decades of the 20th century, the number of artists around the world producing handmade teddy bears, has continued to increase. While their output has been much smaller than that of large manufacturers producing teddies for the collectors' market, their work has still been highly influential and was even encouraged when the Golden Teddy Awards were first introduced in 1987. That was soon followed, in 1990, by the TOBY (Teddy Bear of the Year) awards.

Through the years, traditional-style teddy bears, both that are dressed and undressed, have continued to be the favorites of artists and collectors. One of the best representations in the field that has emerged in recent years is a Dutchman named Audie Sison. Sison began collecting artists' bears in 1990 and then, five years later, began producing his own designs under the trademark A Teddy...by Audie. He has won numerous prizes including two TOBY's, a Golden Teddy, and the highly sought after Golden Teddy's 'Winner's Circle.'

The traditional teddy bears made by Gregory Gyllenship, owe a lot to early Steiff teddies which have long arms allowing the bear to stand on all fours. Gyllenship's bears are made out of the finest mohair plush, have boot-button eyes and are really a tribute to early days of great bearmaking. Gyllenship is a London based artist who has also made large huggable bears which includes polar bears that have realistic pads on their feet.

Wickenden Bears' Sandra Wickenden uses top of the line mohair plush, hardboard joints, wool felts and old boot-button eyes all traditional materials when creating her teddy bears. While many of her bears are made undressed, there are some that have old collars and laces or leather muzzles which can sometimes be found at antique markets. She also makes multi-jointed bears which are very realistic as she sculpts in leather- their noses, mouths, and claws in such detail (in leather) that they look like wild animals.

In 1991, Janet Clark started making bears and sold them at local craft fairs. She is an award-winning artist who has since moved on to produce limited edition bears under the business name Teddystyle. Clark's speciality is making realistic toy bears which includes an American Black, Chi (a panda), and Kermode (a polar bear). In addition, Clark also makes beautifully dressed, accessorized bears that include an organ-grinder that comes complete with a monkey.

When choosing your first plush stuffed teddy bear, you don't have to run out and track down a specific artists' bear; with the many mass manufactured teddies on the market, there are plenty to choose from - either online or at a local retail shop. However, if a one of a kind plush stuffed teddy bear is what you really want, whose going to stop you from buying one?

Plush Stuffed Toys

The good thing about plush stuffed toys is that they never go out of style. It doesn't matter what year it is, or even what century, plush stuffed toys have been and will continue to be with us well into the future.

When the first teddy bear was created by Margarete Steiff in 1902, it is hard to imagine that that little bear that could, would turn the world of plush stuffed toys on its ear. Even today, teddy bears are hailed as the world's most popular toy. It has been loved by children and adults alike for more than 100 years. What started out as a humble nursery companion, has now become a valuable collector's item that dominates the soft toy industry. A growing number of adults have confessed to loving their old teddy bears and have been prepared to pay increasingly large amounts of money for vintage bears, particularly those made by Margarete Steiff. There are teddy bears today that have such astronomical prices, they far outreach many collector's pockets.

Since the creation of the teddy bear, there have been any number of other types of plush stuffed toys that have come into the market of stuffed animals, which are just as beloved [as the teddy bear] by both children and adults. People collect plush stuffed toys because they are irresistibly drawn to them. There is no denying that they touch the lives of all that come into contact with them. While some might argue that there is no plush stuffed toy that can ever rival the popularity of the teddy bear, look no further than the homes around the world which boast multiple types of plush stuffed toys. It may very well be that in some of those homes, teddy bears are not the plush toy that sits front and center in the collection; it could be a cherished plush turtle, or even a treasured stuffed tiger.

Plush stuffed toys are phenomenally successful in part because they are soft toys that appeal to both genders. The physical qualities of plush stuffed toys is just another trait that makes them so successful. Not only are they soft and snuggable, but they can even stand the rough-and-tumble treatment that is undoubtedly thrown their way every now and again. But, ultimately, plush toys have an immediate unselfish appeal. And all that own them, no matter their age, know instinctively that they are always there to help during times of hardship and are also around during the happiest of times.

German Shepherd Plush Stuffed Animal

One of the world's most beloved dog breeds is the German Shepherd. German Shepherd plush stuffed animals are also just as popular. Like the breed they replicate, German Shepherd plush stuffed animals are hard to resist their soft, plush fur make them ideal for lots of hugs.

The grace, strength and intelligence of the German Shepherd dog has ensured that it remains one of the most popular breeds, much valued as a guard dog, and for military and police work. This excellent working dog is the outcome of a breeding program started only at the very end of the last century. It began in 1899 when a sheep herding dog named Hector, was discovered by Rittmeister von Stephanitz. Hector was akin to ancient herding breeds that were once native to northern Germany. The dog was renamed and eventually was officially registered with the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany. As a result of Hector's 'discovery,' he became the foundation for all German Shepherd's that followed. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1911.

German Shepherd's are easily recognizable; they're almost always black and tan in color (and sometimes all black, or sable) and have erect ears, dark eyes and a long full tail. A German Shepherd plush stuffed animal is replicated to look exactly like the real thing and they can be purchased in any number of sizes. While the breed itself is large males can weigh up to 88 pounds or more some German Shepherd plush stuffed animals are made small enough to fit in your hand, making them a perfect choice for tiny fingers. For those with a penchant for something bigger, German Shepherd plush stuffed animals are also made in both sitting and/or lying positions. Either way, next to the real thing, any child would be very pleased with a German Shepherd plush stuffed animal as part of their plush toy collection.

German Shepherds are both dependable and intelligent. They are also beautiful and gentle. Unfortunately, mass production of Shepherds has resulted in dogs with some extreme health issues, most notably, hip displaysia. But, that hasn't stopped the buying public from purchasing these highly intelligent and gentle dogs. They are hard to resist after all, if not for simply how smart they are.

Life Size Plush Stuffed Animals

By definition, stuffed animals are a luxurious comfort that can keep a child (or an adult) company for hours. Remember, however, that once you succumb to their lovable presence, you will be hard-pressed not to find yourself the owner of a plush or two. There is no denying that plush toys are addictive, so proceed with caution.

Life size plush stuffed animals are a rare treat for anyone that is a fan of plush toys. They are exactly as their name implies: life sized, which means, you are getting a stuffed animal that is as big as it can possibly be in comparison to the real thing. And, because of their size, life size plush stuffed animals will be higher priced. But, if you are really serious about plush toys, money won't mean a thing when it comes to choosing whether or not to buy a life size plush stuffed animal.

If you are a toy collector, or you know someone that is, that collection just won't be complete without an addition of life size plush stuffed animals. They are a must have for anyone that already has a large variety of plush toys or for someone that is about to embark on starting a collection of them. By the same token, if you're unsure what to give your son or daughter (or niece or nephew) on their next birthday (or holiday) why not look at purchasing life size plush stuffed animals? These fantastic plush toys make outstanding items to decorate a room with. In fact, an entire theme can be used around them- the possibilities are endless.

The beauty of life size plush stuffed animals is that some of them are made with wooden or lightweight steel frames which means that children of all ages (usually up to 250 pounds) can actually go for a ride on these spectacular animals. In addition, depending on where you decide to purchase them, some life size stuffed animals are also hand-crafted. Significant research often goes into each animal species so that when it is reproduced as a plush toy, it really is just like having the real animal with you. Hand-crafting also means that the fabric for the animal may have been custom designed and that the animal's coat has been hand-cut and trimmed. You may also find that the life size plush stuffed animal has hand sew leather paws and is hand finished, which gives each of the animals their very own unique personality just as you would find in real life.

Purchasing life size plush stuffed animals is really an investment into a plush toy that truly brings the real animal into your home. Just imagine having a giraffe that is eight feet high or a pony that is four feet in height. Can you even fathom the possibilities these beautiful keepsakes can bring to your child's life?

Dragon Plush Stuffed Animals

Just about every animal and insect you can think of, is now replicated in soft, miniature form. Even animals like dragon plush, which are more mythical than they are 'real.' Despite some fine details and scale being omitted in the quest to make the desired image, many creators of dragon plush have done a fine job in getting it just right.

Dragons are winged and scaly serpents that have a crested head and enormous claws. They are usually represented as having wings and able to breathe fire. It is the serpent dragon that is believed to be the one that was the 'first' of the dragon 'species' which went on to motivate all others that came later in legends, stories, and myths. Serpent dragons are very large and have no wings or limbs. In addition, they are very much like snakes and live in bodies of water like the ocean. Their most notable quality was having more than one head, such as the hydra.

The most 'well known of all the dragon 'species' is the Western Dragon; it had four legs, breathed fire, and wings. Western dragons were considered to be the ones that loved gold and were most greedy. In contrast, the Asian dragon, known as the Eastern Dragon, usually had four legs and no wings even though they were still able to fly. They were also able to turn themselves into something else so as to be able to help humans.

In the world of dragons, Chinese dragons are quite famous. Their bodies are snake-like and they have a bearded face. To reach maturity, it takes this dragon close to 3,000 years. 15,000 years is needed for it to become full grown, 500 more years are needed for it to grow horns (from which they can hear) and if they are to have wings, they need another 1,000 years to grow them. Chinese dragons are made up of four 'species:' the celestial dragon, the spiritual dragon, the ti-lung dragon, and the treasure dragon.

Yet another 'species' of dragon is the Vietnamese dragon known for its camel head, deer horns, fish eyes, buffalo ears, and snake and neck body. In addition, it also had carp scales, eagle claws, and tiger feet. It was able to live in the water, underground, or in the sky and was not only immortal but was unable to reproduce other dragons. In Vietnam, the dragon is a symbol of both power and nobility and on the official dress of the emperor, a five-clawed dragon could be found.

Like with dolls, it's usually the facial features that are the key attraction to soft toys, closely followed by the feel of its 'fur' or skin and then the stuffing. With a plush dragon, however, it's not the face that is the initial attraction especially since many of them have so many other things going on brightly colored bodies, wings, long tails, and clawed feet. With a plush dragon, its overall appeal is what attracts us most to these creatures of legend.

Wolf Plush Animals & Facts

When it comes to stuffed animals, most children can't be torn away from their cherished teddy bears. And why should they be? After all, teddy bears are as popular today as when they were first created in 1902. Since 1902, however, there is much more variety of stuffed animals to choose from. Despite the teddy's iconic status, it is possible for a child to enjoy and even embrace other kinds of plush toys. Take the wolf, for example. Some wolf plush are incredibly life-like and designed with luxurious, soft fur. Online stores carry just this type of wolf plush they have one that is three feet long and is absolutely gorgeous! It is a must have for anyone that has a penchant for stuffed animals, especially 'wild' ones.

When children learn that dogs are descended from wolves, their interest in wolf plush may peak. Wolves, in fact, are the largest members of the dog family. They are often misunderstood creatures, that have a long history with humans that is antagonistic at best. Gray wolves were all but wiped out in the lower 48 United States, though in recent years, breeding programs and strict laws regarding hunting has helped gray wolf populations bounce back. Unfortunately, gray wolves did not survive in Europe, but they can still be found in Alaska, Canada, and Asia - there are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 wolves living in Canada alone.

In 1980, wild red wolves in the United Stated became extinct. With a small number of captured red wolves, scientists were able to establish breeding programs and then successfully reintroduced the animals in North Carolina. Today, red wolves are living in the southeastern U.S. with just 100 of them left in the wild.

Wolves live in families called packs that consist of a male, a female, and their pups which were born several years earlier. Wolf plush may further interest a child when they learn about the wolves social structure; they may be able to relate wolves back to their own family (father, mother, siblings). Wolves can have up to six pups (called litter mates) born in a litter. They are born with their eyes closed and weigh just one pound. After about 14 days, the pups open their eyes. By the time they are three weeks of age, they start on a diet of meat like their parents. Like most human families, all members of a wolf pack take turns caring for the pups; they will bring back food to the mother so she doesn't have to leave the pups; they will also babysit and play with them.

A child can learn a great deal about wolf plush by learning more about the animal they were designed for. Like all stuffed animals, a child knows that they are more than just a soft toy but companions and lifelong friends that both comfort them and join in their greatest adventures.

Adorable Wildlife Plush Animals

Wildlife plush are life-like stuffed animals that represent every corner of the globe. It's for this very reason, they're so popular with children. From unusual and lesser known animals like the anteater, to the always endearing monkey, there is something for everyone.

The attention to both detail and realism over the years to wildlife plush, has been significant and as a result, they are more in demand than ever. Some wildlife plush can even be found in puppet form which opens up an entirely new world of play for a child. Puppets are toys that both engage and delight children of all ages and help encourage imagination and improve concentration. With the fascination they hold for them, puppets can often assist in helping a child overcome their shyness. In addition, puppets are often used by therapists so that children that have been traumatized, can feel more secure in opening up and expressing their feelings.

In popular culture, the term 'wildlife' refers to animals that have remained untouched by anything to do with human factors, though most scientists believe that human activities around the world has impacted wildlife in one way or another. Wildlife is made up of all non-domesticated plants and animals and can be found in all ecosystems rain forests, deserts, and plains. There are even a number of urban sites which can boast a wide variety of wildlife (not always with great pleasure, however). Children often come into contact with wildlife when they visit zoos and animal parks; they may even be lucky enough to see some of it in their own backyard. Television and movies are also responsible for exposing children to many species of wildlife, thus combined with their real-life 'experiences,' they typically will ask for wildlife plush so as to have reminders of their favorites.

Various governments and organizations around the world are involved in and responsible for wildlife matters. This includes the protection and management of different species of migratory birds, wildlife habitat, and endangered species. In addition, they conduct research on wildlife issues which nationally affect their countries and the world. For promotional purposes, wildlife plush are often used to bring awareness to a particular species. For example, the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), is one of the leading conservation organizations around the world and their website boasts a number of wildlife plush that can be purchased when an 'adoption' is made of one the endangered animals in the world (such as tigers and panda's).

Wildlife plush are not just cute and cuddly stuffed animals they serve as a constant reminder of just how important their existence is to the planet. While children benefit from hours of play and constant companionship with their wildlife plush, they also serve as ambassadors to the world that we all play an important role in their survival.

Camel Plush Animals & Facts

Camel plush might seem like an unusual choice for a soft toy, but if the recipient (or purchaser) happen to be an animal lover, it's not unusual at all. Even though they may love all animals, perhaps their tastes run more along the lines of the exotic, and if that's the case, camels fit very well into that category.

Camels are ungulates which means hoofed animals. They have even toes whose weight is distributed evenly amongst their third and fourth toe when they walk. The two species of camel are the Dromedary (or Arabian camel) which has one hump, and the Bactrian camel which has two humps. Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps, even though they can go up to two weeks without it. In fact, their humps are a reservoir of fatty tissue, while water is actually stored in their blood.

Online stores happen to have both species of camel plush. The single humped camel (dromedary) stuffed animal is a full 20 inches long lying down. He is quite lovely and has soft brown plush fur. Then there's an amazing two-humped (Bactrian) camel plush, that stands more than three feet tall! He is likely the best plush camel you will ever come across. Like teddy bears, camel plush can be a lifelong friend and companion and with camel plush of this size, they really will feel like your friend.

The 14 million Dromedary camels that exist, most of which are domesticated, can be found in Somalia, Sudan, Mauritania, as well as other nearby countries. The Bactrian camel, however, does not have nearly as many of the species left as the Dromedary; it is estimated that just 1.4 million Bactrian camels are left, most of which are domesticated. There may still be, however, about 1000 wild Bactrian camels roaming the Gobi desert in China and Mongolia.

Camels were first domesticated by humans around 3,500 years ago. Both camel species are still used for their rich milk which is actually higher in nutrients than cow's milk. They stand six feet high at the shoulder when fully mature and 12 feet at the hump. In short bursts they can run up to 40 miles an hour and can sustain speeds of 25 miles per hour.

While camels can live until they are 60 years of age, camel plush will age with you, for as long as you choose to have it. If you and your camel plush should ever be separated, it would likely go on to another owner, hopefully for as long as they live. Either way, a camel plush is a worthwhile soft toy to add to any stuffed animal collection, or, if a collection does not already exist, a great first start would be camel plush stuffed animals.

Large Plush Stuffed Animals and Birth of the British Bear

When growing up, just about every child has had the pleasure of having large plush stuffed animals in their lives. While large plush stuffed animals are often pricier than standard size soft toys, that hasn't deterred them from being just as popular as their much smaller 'brothers' and 'sisters.'

Britain was the third most important nation in the history of the teddy bear. By 1908, the craze for bears had spread [to Britain]. While the first bears to appear were imported from Germany, it wasn't too long until the home market developed; in 1906, teddies were featured in the catalogues of J.K. Farnell – a London based manufacturer.

The Farnell family business was founded by John Kirby Farnell in 1840 in London's Notting Hill. The company first began as a silk merchant which focused its production on pincushions, tea cosies, and penwipers (a type of cloth used to clean ink from a pen). When John Farnell died in 1897, Henry and Agnes Farnell, his son and daughter, moved the company to west London. It was here that the manufacturing of soft toys and teddy bears began, with some made out of unusual materials such as rabbit skin. They soon turned, however, to higher quality curly mohair plush and began to produce top notch bears.

The Farnell bears had pointed muzzles, long arms and legs, and humps on the top of their backs. Boot-buttoned eyes (like in Steiff bears) were also part of the design but the company quickly switched to painted glass eyes. The most distinguishing feature of the Farnell bear, however (and which is also specific to British teddies) is its webbed paws; the stitches that formed the claws were linked in such a way on the paws, they produced a web effect.

Farnell went on to produce fully jointed miniature bears during World War I that were made out of golden mohair.

These same bears were also available in red, white, and blue. These were given as a good-luck charm to soldiers on the way to the front by their sweethearts. Some of them obviously worked their magic because surviving bears were found intact in uniform pockets more than 70 years later (the bears were made with upturned faces to they could look out of a breast pocket).

Another British firm with a similar history to J.K. Farnell's was W. J. Terry. At the beginning of the 20th century, Terry began producing soft toys that were covered in real fur. After the success of a toy dog called Terry'er in 1909 (based on King Edward VII's dog Caesar), the company went on to open a large factory in Hackney, London. In 1913, the company moved once again and while continuing to develop the Terry'er toy range, it also introduced mohair plush teddy bears. These bears looked much like the ones produced by Farnell – so much so, the two have often been confused. Terry's bears had long silky mohair plush and a fairly straight body with a pronounced hump. Like Farnell, the Terry bears had large glass eyes with painted backs and they also adopted the webbed-claw paws.

It's thanks to companies like Steiff and Farnell, that large plush stuffed animals have continued to thrive today. When the world wide depression hit in the 1930s, the Terry company was deeply affected and production ceased by World War II. Other producers of quality teddy bears had even briefer existences. While large plush stuffed animals may not have been part of the initial production of the first teddy bears, with the teddy's popularity, they soon followed, offering up an entire range of different types of animals.

Large Plush Animals

If you think a large stuffed animal is an overly extravagant plush toy, you would be mistaken. For true soft toy connoisseurs, a large stuffed animal is a much welcomed addition to an ever growing plush toy collection.

Whenever another birthday rolls around or another holiday beckons in the not too distant future, it's tough to find a gift for the person that has everything, especially when it's a child. How many toys can they have, after all? While clothing is always appreciated (by the parents), depending on the age of the child, they will grow out of them very quickly. However, if you're shopping for someone that has a particular interest in soft toys, you have just made your job a whole lot simpler. What could be a better gift than a large stuffed animal? While you may think soft toys are pass, think again. There is no such thing as a child with too many stuffed animals.

In the years since the invention of the teddy bear, large stuffed animals have evolved from coarse imitations to sleek and exact replicas of the animals they represent. They are a laudable improvement for which children (and adults) are thankful. There is a new standard to these stuffed animals that are designed to be much more than just entertainment for children and adults. A large stuffed animal is comforting, there for hugs whenever they are needed. A large stuffed animal is also an ideal companion for play as it can come alive as much as a child's imagination will allow. What child wouldn't want to have a plush tiger as their protector? A child can't have a tiger in their real life, but they can surely have one in their make-believe life. Some large stuffed animals on the market today are so life-like, from a distance you just might be fooled into thinking it's something more than it really is.

A child's stuffed toy can grow into something close to 'human' given they often become their most treasured companion, confidant, and friend; some children even continue their relationships with their soft toys well into adulthood.
A large stuffed animal can be used as a tool to further a child's education about the animal it represents. With many stuffed animals having movable limbs, any number of stories can be dreamt up about what their life is really like in their natural habitats. Children will look on in awe as they listen to tales of how their beloved lion or panda raises their family, survives in the wild, and hunts for food. Manipulating a large stuffed animal while the story is being told will only add to its allure. While most of us will never experience what it's like to touch a real wild animal, with a child's fantasy and role-playing, a stuffed animal can provide a semblance of meaning to what the actual experience might be like.

Stuffed animals - iconic and emblematic of childhood innocence, are actually toys that offer a peek into the owner's imagination. So when it's time to purchase that next children's gift, look no further than a large stuffed animal.
