Question Mark Butterfly - Polygonia interrogationis

Like all of the anglewing butterflies of the genus Polygonia, the adult Question Mark loves sap and rotting fruit. Normally highly alert, anglewings can become intoxicated if the fruit they are feeding on becomes fermented in the sun. This might have been the reason this Question Mark landed on my hand, and stayed there for a few minutes. Here is a link to my set ‘Insects’ : flic.kr/s/aHsjvKsdhM

Sergeant Stubby was named as the American hero war dog of World War I for his serve in the army and a legend in Paris for saving a young girl from being hit by a car. Another dog named Trakr helped find survivors of the September 11 attacks. The stories of brave animals that tried to save people like those are always made strong impressions on readers and attracted worldwide media attention.

am Animation: Baby Animation Steps For Children

by Boston Public Library

SAM Animation is a simple software platform where users can create stop-action movies using images from a web cam or importing pictures from a camera. It is compatible for either Mac or PC and most importantly, 3D Modal animation it is free for everyone. What makes SAM Animation attractive for children? It has a simple interface which can be easily explained. Here is the description of things which the software can accomplish from the official website of SAM Animation:

- Snap images from a live web-cam feed or import pictures
- Add narration of import audio files
- Onion-skinning for easy frame-to-frame alignment
- Adjustable frame-rate
- Time-lapse functionality
- Add text and shape overlays to each frame
- Import movie files and parse them into frame-by-frame projects
- Export your project into a variety of movie formats

These features are simple enough for children to learn. Actually, most children are able to do this already by creating their own video content and posting it in website such as YouTube. Professor Garry Hoban of the University of Wollongong in Australia figured that these easy-to-use technologies can be used not only for entertainment purposes but also for education. Thus the birth of his concept, Slowmotion.Slowmotion goes straight to the point of animation. It works by using two frames per second instead of the animation standard of 25 frames per second.3D Modal Through this, children can concentrate on the content. The Salisbury University applied the Slowmotion methodology in their classes and used it to engage children in science projects."The 'Slowmation' technique is close enough to popular forms of entertainment that it catches students' attention while really getting them to focus on underlying science concepts," says Ed Robeck of Salisbury University's Teacher Education Department, "And it's great to see how proud the students are of the products they can make, which is also very motivational."At this point in the development of children's animation skills, the premium should be placed on the essentials and in the content instead on fancy technical sensibilities. Animation, after all, is a medium used to deliver strong narratives. This is why the Slowmation technique is a good way to start to imbibe the values of animation early on.Engaging children in science projects was a good example as it helps sharpen the creativity of children and also imagine things through animation which is normally impossible to view in real life. Education of children in the specifics of animation should always focus on the cerebral part of production: the pre-production. They should know beforehand what they want to say; there should be a solid plan in order to deliver a strong material from an animation - even if it is just done with two frames per second.
Working children on the basics of animation early on may give them immediate satisfaction because they are able to replicate the processes behind their favorite cartoons. This may even inspire them to create their own characters, plots and storylines. The key insights to remember are to always encourage children with the right support and equipments if they are so enthusiastic about animation and to likewise not push them into something they don't want to do. Let them enjoy it and it will eventually turn into their passion.

Animals Possess Scary Names

by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)

While Vampire bats and Tasmanian devils are great disasters to other kinds of animals, Frankenfish are not as scary as their name. It\'s necessary to have a explanation why animals owning scary names may or may not be fierce to human and animal life. For example, Frankenfish (or horror fish) are called basing on the name of Victor Frankenstein, a fictional character of 1818 novel Frankenstein. They are salmons with gene transfer, thus those salmons are not listed in animal categories. Until now, Frankenfish have not been recognized by science; they are just called AquAdvantage by AquAdvantage company in America. Due to being gene transferred, Frankenfish are two times bigger than ordinary salmons. Let\'s have a look at the most typical animals possessing scary names as follows.

Natural History Museum has found Vampire squid, or called Dracula fish, or Danionella dracula in a stream in Myanmar. Danionella dracula is about 15-25 cm long, called Vampire squid due to possessing 2 fearsome-looking fangs. These two fangs are often used to take blood of enemies in battles.

Danionella dracula is said to be among the most extraordinary vertebrates discovered in the last few decades.

The Tasmanian devil is a kind of carnivorous animal of the family Dasyuridae. A Tasmanian devil has the size of a small dog with the average length of 0.6m and the weight of 12kg. Despite slowly moving, Tasmanian devil can run only 13 km per hour in a short distance. At present, Tasmanian devil is in danger of extinction due to a spreading-out cancer.

Kiwa hirsuta is about 15 cm long, and covered will full of setae mainly covering its pereiopods. As a member of the crab family, the Kiwa hirsuta is called basing on the name of Kiwa - “goddess of shellfish” and Hirsuta - “hairy”. Those setaes help Yeti crab to catch or kill preys.

Kiwa hirsuta is the scientific name of Yeti crab found in the bottom of Pacific in 2005.

Being different with other weird animals, Vampire bats can live up to nine years in the wild environment. Vampire bats mainly live on the blood of mammals including humans. However, they do not absorb blood, they just grab the meat and lick blood running from wounds.

Vampire bats can run up to 7.9 km per hour to attack any warm-blooded animal.

Due to being gene transferred, Frankenfish have not been recognized as a kind of fish by science; thus they are just called AquAdvantage by AquAdvantage company in America. Frankenfish are not as scary as their name.

Frankenfish is good for human health and environment.

Animal Gifts for Her

by Mark Witton

As a nation of pet lovers, people love getting gifts that they can use for their pets or that feature the animals they love. If you know someone who is mad about their pet or any other animals, we have come up with some perfect gift ideas for her. The Cat Lovers Gift Set is a little tin containing a selection of cat toys, including cat balls, a catnip toy and a toy mouse. Another gift for her which is really a gift for the cat is the Personalised Cat Bowl, which is available in pink or blue. Personalise this gift with the cat’s name along with the word ‘Food’ or ‘Water’ as well if you wish.

If you prefer to buy gifts for her that are just cat-themed and not actually for the cat then check out our Cat Wine Bottle Holders. These are made from 100% recyclable metal and are a stylish feature of any table. They also look great when not in use. We have a cat sat on its hind legs, a cat ‘chef’ and a cat with a dog available in this range.

Other favourite cat items which we think make hilarious gift ideas for her, even if she’s not a cat lover, are the mug and coaster sets featuring cat faces instead of famous celebrities. Examples include the Amy Winehouse famous hairdo atop a kitty’s head, as well as similar designs based on Jack Sparrow, Audrey Hepburn and Lady Gaga. The Audrey Hepburn design is also available as a notebook.

For something to decorate her person rather than her home, we love the Black Cat charm which is compatible with most brands of charm bracelets and necklaces, such as Pandora and Chamilia. This charm comes in an individual hot pink pouch and we have several other beads and charms available if you prefer to buy a set.

We also have various Bag Charms in different cat designs, which make a pretty stocking filler.

If the person you are shopping for is more of a dog lover, never fear. All the gifts mentioned above are also available in the equivalent ‘dog version’. Our range of dog beads and charms is more extensive, however, with designs available in ‘Dog Paw’, ‘British Bulldog’, ‘Scottie Dog’ and ‘Snoop the Dog’. We also have more bag charms in different styles and designs, including the colourful ‘Sausage Dog in Blue Spotted Bag’ and ‘Celebrity Dog in Pink Handbag’. These clip on enamel charms are extremely versatile and can be used to brighten up handbags, bracelets or necklaces.

It might be that you are looking for an animal gifts for her that isn’t based on any particular pet, in which case we think the animal shaped watering cans are fantastic. The different animals represent different size watering cans which can be used indoors or outdoors, and the metal designs include elephants, a chick, a robin, a pig and a bunny. These watering cans are ideal for any gardener, big or small, and also look attractive in the garden or on the windowsill when not in use.

Icons were used as teaching tools. Most of the notes placed on this icon are biblical quotes or paraphrasing.

(This was my first egg tempera and I fell in love with the medium when I saw the ultramarine. Maybe I should have toned it down, but the intensity of egg tempera colors amazes me.)

I've compiled a chronological collection of some Nativity of Jesus works of art into three timeframes:

How old is the Nativity icon design? The Patriarch of Alexandria, Cyril I (404-430 A.D.), authorized the use of icons as a visual means for teaching Christian doctrines. I think one of these was the Nativity icon. If this is so it would mean that the Nativity icon design extends back to at least the 5th century (404-430). In her article Origins of Nativity Scenes for Christmas, Christine Nyholm reports that "Some scholars believe that the earliest Nativity scene dates back to 2nd century AD in the catacombs of St. Priscilla." Both my conjecture and Christine Nyholm's conjecture require independent validation.
