The Monocoupe 110 Special was a clipped-wing version of the 110, part of a line that began with Don Luscombe's Mono 22 and continued with the 70, 90, and 110 models. The sport coupes of the 1930s, these fast and maneuverable aircraft were ideal for racers Phoebe Omlie and Johnny Livingston. Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | De Havilland-Canada DHC-1A Chipmunk, Pennzoil Special:

De Havilland originally designed the Chipmunk after World War II as a primary trainer to replace the venerable Tiger Moth. Among the tens of thousands of pilots who trained in or flew the Chipmunk for pleasure was veteran aerobatic and movie pilot Art Scholl. He flew his Pennzoil Special at air shows throughout the 1970s and early '80s, thrilling audiences with his skill and showmanship and proving that the design was a top-notch aerobatic aircraft.

Art Scholl purchased the DHC-1A in 1968. He modified it to a single-seat airplane with a shorter wingspan and larger vertical fin and rudder, and made other changes to improve its performance. Scholl was a three-time member of the U.S. Aerobatic Team, an air racer, and a movie and television stunt pilot. At air shows, he often flew with his dog Aileron on his shoulder or taxied with him standing on the wing.

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Press Release: National Air and Space Museum Receives Boeing S-307 Stratoliner for Display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Museum's New Companion Facility at Dulles Airport:

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum welcomed today (Aug. 6) the sole surviving Boeing S-307 Stratoliner to its new home when the silver pioneering airliner arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia for display at the museum's new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The museum's companion facility, adjacent to the airport, opens to the public Dec. 15.

The luxuriously appointed Stratoliner, built in the late 1930s, was the world's first passenger airplane to be pressurized, allowing it to avoid rough weather by flying at unprecedented altitudes (20,000 feet) for transports of the era.

The airplane has been in the museum's collection since 1972 but because of its size and weight could not be displayed at the museum's flagship building on the National Mall. A team of volunteers and Boeing staff performed extensive restoration work on the airplane in Seattle.

"Visitors to the Udvar-Hazy Center will take one look at this airplane and be transported back to a glamorous age when the world became smaller for the traveler who required speed and luxury," said Gen. J.R. "Jack" Dailey, director of the National Air and Space Museum. "We are indebted to the Boeing restoration team for turning back the clock on this beautiful aircraft."

The Stratoliner arrived in Northern Virginia following an appearance at the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual Fly-In at Oshkosh, Wisc. The airplane flew from Allegheny County Airport near Pittsburgh, where it landed August 5th because of bad weather.

With a wingspan of 107 feet and a cabin nearly 12 feet wide, the Clipper Flying Cloud will be exhibited at ground level in the Udvar-Hazy (pronounced OOD-var HAH-zee) Center aviation hangar.

[...]

The Clipper Flying Cloud was delivered to Pan American Airways with two others in 1940. The aircraft carried 33 passengers and a crew of five. The Pan American Airways airplane was reconfigured to seat 45 passengers. Stratoliners included space for berths for overnight travel; paneling in the cabin and lavatory; wall fabric featuring the Pan Am logo, world map and exotic animals; and eight divans.

The Clipper Flying Cloud began service flying Caribbean routes for two years. During World War II, it flew in South America under the direction of the U.S. Army Air Forces. In 1946, it made daily runs between New York and Bermuda. Throughout the next two decades it passed through the hands of several owners, and once served as a presidential plane for the notorious Haitian leader "Papa Doc" Duvalier. After its Haitian sojourn, the Clipper Flying Cloud landed in Arizona.

In 1969, a visiting National Air and Space Museum curator spotted the airplane in Arizona and immediately recognized its historic significance, even while its then-owner planned to convert it into a fire bomber. The Smithsonian subsequently acquired the aircraft and later made arrangements with the Boeing Company for the restoration, dubbed "Operation Flying Cloud," at the Seattle plant where the Stratoliner was originally built.

Boeing technicians and former Pan American employees voluntarily spent six years completely restoring the Stratoliner before it made an emergency landing in Elliott Bay in 2002. Since then, the restoration team has performed additional work so that visitors to the Udvar-Hazy Center will have the opportunity to view the aircraft as it looked the day it rolled off the assembly line more than 60 years ago.

Tropical Duvet Covers for a Exotic Bedding

When we think of adorning our bedroom, the first thing that comes to our mind is our bedding set. Without beautifying it, the bedroom cannot look cozy. So, we will look for adorning our bedding set first. Once it is done, we look for window screen and other furniture sets required for the bedroom.

Now let us set our eyes on beautifying the bedding set. As the term implies, we are not going to buy it alone; we are going to get them only in set. Only the Set would give a gracious look to the bedding set.

When it comes to the bedding set, the first concern is size. We need to decide on the size of the bedding before everything else. For a couple, Queen Bedding would be comfortable. Then we need to decide on the mattress or the comforter that we need to get. Here we need to decide about the bed covers too. To insert a Mattress or a Comforter, we may need a Bedskirt in addition to the Duvet Cover. Fortunately all Duvet Covers of Le Vele Bedding are made with the snap at the foot, which would avoid the usage of a Bedskirt.

Once the Size and Mattress are decided, we can decide the Color of the Duvet Cover that you would like it. Other than the color it is imperative that you decide on the designs. Some like Flower Designs and some like animal print. Even people like to have their celebrities or their fiancée printed on the Duvet Covers.

Tropical Duvet Covers are those which have the exotic look with Moccasin Flower Prints, Animal Prints like Jaguar, Cheetah, Siberian Wolf, Giraffe, Leopard, Tiger, Elephant, Peacock, etc. Simply they have the Exotic Flowers and Animal Prints on it.

We buy Tropical Duvet Covers for the elegant printing that they bear. You need to make doubly sure that the print long last and the duvet has the long reusable life. If the print does not last long, there is no use of buying it.

Le Vele Bedding is in the forefront of manufacturing and distributing Tropical Duvet Covers in the USA and Canada. They use the latest Reactive Dyeing Technology for an excellent brightness and long lasting colors.

Please read the Washing Instructions carefully and stick to it, before you go for washing it.

Exotic Hunting in the Texas Hill Country

One does not have to travel to the far regions of Africa to enjoy a good hunt for exotic animals as the Texas Hill Country has become quite notorious for such.

The Texas Hill Country, located directly between Austin and San Antonio, has become a notorious exotic animal hunting region. Its rolling hills are covered with cedar and oak, which is separated by grassy pastures making it the perfect habitat for a number of exotic game species. These species include animals from North Africa, India, Nepal and China. There is the emu, fallow deer, barasingha, Addax antelope, Blackbuck antelope, Axis deer, red stag, red sheep, scimitar horn oryx, zebras, bison and more.

Do to the number of exotic animals in this region, hunting is permitted year around with a state hunting license.  There are a number of licensed guides in the area to help you along the way. These guides usually have permits and access to ranches and property for hunting.

Where do all these exotic animals come from? Many of these animals had originally been imported by collectors and hunters who have private ranches. Many of these animals have escaped and established themselves by the tens of thousands around southern Texas and particularly in the Hill Country. Now the overpopulation of these varieties has become a problem.

The executive director of the Exotic Wildlife Association, Charly Seale, says that there are nearly 400,000 exotics living behind high fences in Texas. In addition there are 50,000 to 60,000 free-ranging exotics living outside of these fences.

He adds, the populations have been growing at a rate of 10 percent a year.  Owners of herds manage their population by allowing routine hunting. One ranch owner said they try to shoot 30 black bucks a year and 10 to 20 axis deer.

The hunting of these exotic trophy animals has not only been a boon for hunters but for locals as well.  Hunts can start at $ 1,500 for black bucks and axis deer and go up from there for super exotics such as bison and kudu. Texas A&M studies have shown that the exotic animal business in Texas has assisted the economy by about $ 1.3 billion. For the Nature Conservancy, they see the hunters playing a key role in managing free-ranging exotics.

For those who hire hunting guides, their fee usually covers a two to four day package which includes the daily hunt fee, meals, lodging and guiding services. There are additional  costs that vary according to the type of animal hunted to if an animal is wounded and survives after being shot – so ask your guide about these fees.

Whether you're hunting with a gun or bow, you must purchase a license, which is sold at most local grocery stores. Nonresidents of Texas will need a valid Non-Resident Special Hunting License (Type 107) or Non-Resident 5-Day Special Hunting License (Type 157). Those under 17 must obtain a Youth Hunting License (Type 169).

Exotics that can be legally hunted include animals that are ungulates, that is grass- or plant-eating, single-or cloven-hoofed mammals that are not native to Texas. This list includes: aoudad sheep, axis deer, fallow deer, elk, bison, blackbuck antelope, feral hog, sika deer, scimitar-horned oryx, wildebeest, ibex, mouflon, Texas dahl sheep, Catalina goat, gemsbok, markhor, impala, eland, barasinga (Indian swamp deer) and other species. Hunting of ratites (emu, rhea, ostrich, cassowary) is also allowed.

No, one doesn't have to travel to other countries to enjoy an exotic animal hunt, when there is the Hill Country of Texas right at your back door.

Exotic Animal Laws

Pets have a special place in the hearts and minds of many people. They provide a constant companion that makes no judgments based upon a pet owner's outward physical appearance, intellectual capacity, technical skill, or any of the countless other factors that influence one's acceptance by their peers. For many, the close bond established with a childhood pet lingers with them long after the death of a companion animal and offers a ready source of happy memories. But the trend toward keeping exotic animals as pets has endangered the safety of both animals and human beings.

The history of close relationships with domesticated creatures and a recent explosion of the exotic animal trade has led a number of individuals to the misguided conclusion that these wild beasts are relatively harmless, just as are their tamed counterparts. This mistaken assumption, however, neglects the fact that the domestication of a breed requires hundreds, or even thousands of years of focused and sustained efforts. As a result, some people choose to keep exotic animals as pets. That decision can have dire consequences, and in recognition of this threat to public safety, some states have enacted laws to regulate and/or bar the possession of exotic animals.

Iowa Specifics

The need for this kind of legislation is immediately obvious when you consider the danger that these animals can pose to the health of those around them. They may carry viruses and bacteria that can sicken or kill humans who are exposed to these microbiological hazards. Herpes, shigella, Hantavirus, rabies, salmonella, and other threats only represent a small portion of the illnesses that exotic animals may carry.

Beyond these immunological risks, an attack can cause irreparable harm. Equipped with the teeth, claws, strength, and speed necessary to hunt or defend in the wild, many animals have the capacity to swiftly kill or inflict grave injuries upon anyone in their path.

In 2007 the state of Iowa passed a new law to more strictly govern the transportation and ownership of exotic animals. Some of the noteworthy elements of the state law include provisions specifying that:

All exotic pets must have an electronic microchip injected for identification

All exotic animals must be registered with the appropriate state authorities

Unless being seen by a veterinarian, the animal has to remain in an enclosure

Vital information, photographs, and proof of insurance must be filed

Breeding is strictly barred, as is importing these animals

Owners must be adults with no animal neglect or abuse convictions

Owners cannot have been convicted of any felony in the 10 years preceding

If You Have Been Attacked

Sadly, these laws cannot guarantee your safety and many individuals choose to flagrantly violate the law.

Exotic Pets - Snakes

Snakes are lithe and graceful in that way peculiar to animals bred for stealth and hunting, qualities that many owners find particularly attractive. While they're never going to show the affection of a dog or a cat, snakes have a certain unique draw to them all their own. They are fascinating and mysterious, primordial even. But they can also be quite a handful (in the case of pythons, quite literally), and caring for them can be quite difficult if you're new to snake ownership. If you're interested in getting a pet snake, this short guide can help.

Choosing a Snake

Before you go to the store and purchase a new pet, you need to figure out what kind of snake you want to keep as a pet. There are many different options out there, but first-time users may want to keep things simple and stick to a few different species. But even before you do that, you need to find out if a snake is right for you. Some things to keep in mind:

* Some species of snakes live for a long time - sometimes upwards of twenty years. If you're not ready for this kind of commitment, a snake may not be right for you.
* You will have to be comfortable feeding prey animals to your snake. Frozen prey is the best, but you'll need to devote freezer space to dead rodents and such.
* Snakes are lithe and strong, and can be adept at escaping their tanks.
* If you don't choose the right kind of snake, they can be quite dangerous.

If you're comfortable with all of these, then you're probably ready to invest in a snake. It's better to get a snake bred in captivity than one that was captured in the wild, for obvious reasons. When you get your snake, you should ask to be shown the proper way to feed the snake, to familiarize yourself with the process.

Some species are better as pets than others, with the following being recommended for beginners:

* Corn Snakes
* King Snakes
* Milk Snakes
* Ball Pythons

These are just the basics, and if you're interested in learning more about snake ownership and how to best provide a good environment for your snake, you should consult with a veterinarian.

The Exotic Animals of Australia

There are many places on earth that you can visit on your vacations and family holidays, but Australia tops the list for places with unusual animals. There are some of the strangest animals living in this part of the world. For some reason, Australia has the largest collection of unusual animals in the world.

The kangaroo is one of the most unusual animals in the world and Australia is its home. All over the world, people associate the strange looking animal with the country of Australia. It is on the money and the national symbol of Australia. In Australia there are four different kinds of kangaroo. The red kangaroo, eastern gray, western gray and antilopine are the different types of kangaroo that are found in the country The red kangaroo can stand as tall as six feet seven and some weigh over two hundred pounds.

When people first started visiting this part of the world, the tales of the exotic creatures started reaching back to all areas of Europe. Can you imagine how the tales of the kangaroo sounded to those back in Europe when travelers returned with the story? It looks similar to a deer in the head area, but it stands on only two legs. The animal hops on the two back legs and babies are held in the front pouch. The stories must have sounded like exaggeration to the folks back home. It is clearly understandable why some people may not have believed the tales of the strange creatures.

The Tasmanian Tiger is another animal that once roamed the countryside of Australia. The animal is now extinct but it once hunted the kangaroo. The Tasmanian tiger is actually similar to a wolf but it has the stripes of a tiger extending from the shoulders to the tail.

The animal is actually a marsupial like a kangaroo or a koala bear.

The Tasmanian tiger is no longer roaming the countryside of Australia with the last one dying in the London Zoo during the 1930s. Even though these unique and unusual creatures are currently extinct, there have been some reports in Australia of the Tasmanian tiger, but these reports have been unsubstantiated.
