Giraffe Stuffed Animal & History

The giraffe has been described as "magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, and colossal in height." They are rather unusual animals when you think about it and as is the case, it's no surprise to find that giraffe stuffed animals are gaining in popularity simply because they're different.

In Africa, some ancient cultures revered the giraffe so highly that the animal has been found etched on cave paintings and in prehistoric rock. At one time, the giraffe was an unknown animal outside of Africa and because of its unusual looks and shock appeal, it was often sent as a diplomatic gift to other countries. One of the first known recordings of such a thing was in 1415, when a giraffe was presumably sent from Kenya to China.

The giraffes scientific name Giraffe Camelopardalis, is derived from a mistake in which the animal was thought to be a cross between a camel and a leopard. It's the tallest living animal on the planet standing up to 19 feet; its unique 'design' has adapted to be able to reach vegetation that is otherwise inaccessible to other plant eating animals. And, despite its very large size, the giraffe is known as a selective feeder and can survive on as little as 15 pounds of foliage per day.

The next time your child requests a new plush toy, consider a giraffe stuffed animal instead of the standard bear. If nothing else, the sheer look of surprise on your child's face at receiving such an unusual plush animal, will be worth its weight in gold.

On Sept. 28, “Happy,” the National Zoo’s 28-year-old Nile hippopotamus, was transported to his new home at the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin. The 5,000-pound hippo was moved in preparation for Elephant Trails—the renovation and expansion of the Zoo’s Asian elephant exhibit. The Zoo arranged for Happy’s relocation to Milwaukee because construction on the Elephant House interior had begun. Happy shared the elephant habitat with the Zoo’s three elephants. Elephant Trails, built solely to accommodate a herd of elephants, is scheduled to open in 2011. Happy was born at the National Zoo on Jan. 4, 1981; staff named him Happy in reference to the “Happy New Year” greeting. Nile hippos can live up to 45 years in the wild and often longer in zoos. Hippos are land animals adapted for an amphibious life. These bulky animals wallow in lakes, rivers, and wetlands by day and graze on land by night. Nile hippos live in sub-Saharan Africa.

Yorkshire Terrier Stuffed Animal

Yorkshire Terriers originated in the mid-19th century around the industrial heartlands of northern England. They were bred by working men, for whom a large dog would have been difficult to keep, but who wanted a lively companion. Their probable forebears are the old Black-and-Tan Terriers, the Maltese, and the now extinct Clysedale Terrier. From each litter the smallest dogs were selected for breeding and the Yorkshire Terrier gradually shrank to the proportions we see today.

Yorkshire Terriers or Yorkies, as they are more commonly referred to, make an ideal pet for someone that is not partial to big dogs. For those unfortunate enough to have allergies to dogs, a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal is likely the next best thing to having one. In addition, if your child has a plush toy collection that consists of different dog breeds, adding a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal to the already existent assembly of canines is a must.

Even though Yorkies are tiny, don't be fooled by their small size. Despite being so little, they are surprisingly domineering and make very good watch dogs. Amazingly, Yorkies excel in some of what are considered to be large dog breed sports such as flyball, agility training, and tracking. Although Yorkies only weigh up to seven pounds, they have huge personalities that have won over many a persons heart. They are loyal, brave, clever, and full of energy and are completely oblivious to the fact that they are so small.

Another benefit to having a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal over the real thing, is that the daily maintenance that is required of the breed, becomes a non-issue. A Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal is low on the care scale in terms of clipping its nails, and grooming its coat, which is something that is a frequent requirement with the breed. With a Yorkies long silky coat, it's necessary to enure that knots and tangles don't form, thus almost daily brushing is a must.

Given there is some debate over whether or not Yorkies make good family pets, having a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal instead, takes the worry out of whether or not it will get along with young children that may be in the home. Like most small dog breeds, Yorkies are not partial to roughhousing, thus many breeders do not recommend them for anyone with very young children. Young kids typically don't quite know their limitations when it comes to pets in the home, thus, unless properly supervised, unintentional accidents can happen; with a Yorkshire Terrier stuffed animal, this will never be a concern.

Turtle Stuffed Animal

Instead of a teddy bear, the next time you're in the market for a plush toy, why not opt for a turtle stuffed animal instead? After all, they are cushiony soft, and oh so snuggable just like teddy bears. Many online stores have lovely sea turtle stuffed animals, one that is a whopping two feet in size which means it is 27 inches long and 18 inches wide that's a whole lot of plush turtle to love!

Sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles that live in both tropical and sub-tropical waters around the world. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. There are some that weigh less than 100 pounds while others are as much as 1,300 pounds. Even their signature upper shells are all different in length, color, and shape.

Sea turtles are not blessed with teeth but do have a beak that has been modified to suit their particular diet. They also don't have ears but have eardrums that are covered with skin. They have an excellent sense of smell and their hearts beat at low frequencies. Out of the water, sea turtles are nearsighted, but underwater they have excellent vision. Their body design and large flippers make them especially adapted for life in the water, however, their ties to the land are also quite strong. To lay eggs in the sand, females must come ashore although males rarely come to land. From the time they are hatchlings and make their way to the water, males remain mostly in the water. Female sea turtles, however, typically nest on the same beach in which they were born (called natal beach). Around the world, nesting occurs at different times. In the United States, that timeframe is from April to October.

To date, researchers are unsure about how long baby turtles stay in the open ocean or where they go. In theory, it is believed that in their very early years, most of their time is spent eating and growing while floating around in large beds of sargasso weeds. When they become the size of a dinner plate, they can be seen at feeding grounds in waters near the shore. Their growth is quite slow and only reach reproductive maturity between 15 and 50 years of age (depending on the species). A sea turtles physical appearance can in no way tell anyone what its age is though it is believed that there are some species which can live to be more than 100.

Sea turtle fossils are about 150 million years old which is just one of many reasons the species is so popular with children. The fact that they lived at the same time as the dinosaurs is always a plus with kids. Despite the fact that sea turtle stuffed animals are not covered in hard, plate shells like the real thing (which makes them quite dinosaur like), turtle stuffed animals enjoy an enormous following regardless.

The gopher tortoises can be found throughout the state of Florida and southern areas of Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and the tip of Eastern Louisiana. They dig their burrows in dry habitats. The gopher tortoise grows on average to be about slightly less than one foot long and weighs about 29 pounds, though they have been found to be as big as 16 inches.

The gopher tortoise is unique in that it is one of the few tortoises to actually make large burrows. Many tortoises hide under vegetations or use very shallow burrows.

The gopher tortoise is a turtle as all tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. Ray Ashton states in his literature for the GTCI, think of them as a cow with a shell. They graze on vegetation just like cows, and therefore, are important players in spreading seeds. Gopher tortoises also have chiseled looking front feet (flippers) and elephant like hind legs.

The gopher tortoise is a rather plain looking turtle as far as colors go. They are either a dark tan, or gray. Their front legs are broad and flat, almost like a shovel. Their back legs look just like an elephant's legs. The top part of their shell is fairly flat, The adult gopher tortoise is a rather drab looking animal, which is in stark contrast for the brightly colored hatchlings.

The gopher tortoise reaches sexual maturity between 12 and 15 years of age, when their shells are about 9 inches long.

Clipping of the Poodle dates back to the days when they were a working and sporting dog; parts of their fur was shaved so as to make swimming easier and to ensure their fur didn't get tangled. Just as children wish for a puppy of their very own, so too do they wish for a pony as well. While puppies are a lifelong commitment of care, love, and attention, so too are horses but on an even larger scale. Just the cost of keeping a horse alone, can break the bank if you are not in the financial position to maintain it. That's where horse stuffed animals come in. The relationship between horses and humans is an ancient one. It is believed that the first horses were likely domesticated some 4,000 years ago and until the invention of the engine, they remained vital to many human societies.

Despite the 400 breeds of horses that exist, there is only one species of horse and they are all grazers. Most horses in the world are domesticated, but there are some that still roam free and are wild. Wild North American mustangs are actually the descendants of the horse the Europeans brought over more than 400 years ago. In fact, wild horses are all descendants of once tame animals that ran free for some three generations. The only wild horse that did not come from domesticated ancestors is the Przewalski. Today, however, this breed only exists in captivity as that last known wild Przewalski's were last seen in Mongolia in 1968.

Wild horses are made up of groups of up to 20 individuals with a stallion a mature male leading the group. The rest of their 'family' consists of females called mares and foals which are young babies. When young males in the group become colts, they are driven away by the stallion. The colts go on to roam with other young males until they can form their own group with females.

Wild or domestic it doesn't really matter to a true horse lover though many would like to see wild horses remain undisturbed in their natural environment. If your love of horses runs deep and you are one of many that are not privileged enough to have one of your own, horse stuffed animals really do make the real thing come to life. And the bigger the horse stuffed animal is, the more lifelike it seems.

Whale Stuffed Animals

The whale most familiar to people is the killer whale. which is one of the reasons whale stuffed animals are so popular. Whale stuffed animals are large, overgrown 'teddy bear' types of plush, which are ideal for hugging and snuggling with.

Orca's or killer whales as they are more commonly known, are part of the toothed whale family, which includes dolphins. In fact, killer whales are actually dolphins, but are much bigger in size. They are often referred to as the wolves of the sea because their behavior is comparable to the wolf.

Killer whales can reach lengths of 33 feet and weigh more than 12,000 pounds with males being the largest. They are mostly black in color with bodies that are covered in distinct white patches. They have a stocky body and a rounded head. A male's tall dorsal fin can be up to 6 feet in height while females are up to 4 feet tall. They eat a wide variety of fish, seals, turtles, penguins, birds, and even sharks. When hunting, killer whales do so with other members of their pod (a group of animals) in which they will go on to share the food with each other. The bonds of a pod are extremely strong and last a lifetime.

On their upper and lower jaws, killer whales have very large, sharp, interlocking teeth 10-13 pairs for a total of 52 altogether. With their teeth curving inwards and backwards, it assists them in catching their prey. Each tooth is about 3 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, although some teeth can be longer.
On a daily basis, an average sized killer whale will consume 550 pounds of food.

When hunting, killer whales can dive to depths of 100 feet. In short bursts, they can also swim up to 30 miles per hour. They are known for breaching swimming very fast toward the surface and then rising up out of the water when attacking their prey. They also will poke their heads out of the water to look around (called spyhopping), and slap their tales on the water.

Killer whales can be found in every ocean in the world and most seas which means they live in water that is tropical and arctic, coastal and deep. They typically do not make long, seasonal migrations although they will travel one hundred miles in an area in order to find specific prey in a specific season.

The best place to see killer whales is in the wild, but until that opportunity arises, killer whale stuffed animals will have to do. Not only are they digusting but you have to doubt the quality of goods at the 99p ("not a penny more") Store in Camberwell. That said I picked up a new pipe for our shower from there that has proved very useful.

The Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata), sometimes known simply as the Shoveler (pronounced /ˈʃʌvələr/), is a common and widespread duck. It breeds in northern areas of Europe and Asia and across most of North America, and is a rare vagrant to Australia. In North America, it breeds along the southern edge of Hudson Bay and west of this body of water, and as far south as the Great Lakes west to Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon.

The Northern Shoveler is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies. The conservation status of this bird is Least Concern.

This species was first described by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758 under its current scientific name.

No living subspecies are accepted today. Fossil bones of a very similar duck have been found in Early Pleistocene deposits at Dursunlu (Turkey). It is unresolved, however, how these birds were related to the Northern Shoveler of today; i.e. whether the differences noted were due to being a related species or paleosubspecies, or attributable to individual variation.

This species is unmistakable in the northern hemisphere due to its large spatulate bill. The breeding male has a green head, white breast and chestnut belly and flanks. In flight, pale blue forewing feathers are revealed, separated from the green speculum by a white border. In early fall the male will have a white crescent on each side of the face. In non-breeding (eclipse) plumage, the drake resembles the female.

The female is light brown, with plumage much like a female Mallard, but easily distinguished by the long broad bill, which is gray tinged with orange on cutting edge and lower mandible. The female's forewing is grey.

They are 19 inches long and have a wingspan of 30 inches with a weight of 1.3 pounds.

Northern Shovelers feed by dabbling for plant food, often by swinging its bill from side to side and using the bill to strain food from the water. It also eats mollusks and insects in the nesting season.

The nest is a shallow depression on the ground, lined with plant material and down, usually close to water.

This is a fairly quiet species. The male has a clunking call, whereas the female has a Mallard-like quack.
This is a bird of open wetlands, such as wet grassland or marshes with some emergent vegetation.

This bird winters in southern Europe, Africa, northern South America, and the Malay Archipelago. In North America it winters south of a line from Washington to Idaho and from New Mexico east to Kentucky, also along the Eastern Seaboard as far north as Massachusetts. In the British Isles, home to more than 20% of the North Western European population, it is best known as a winter visitor, although it is more frequently seen in southern and eastern England, especially around the Ouse Washes, the Humber and the North Kent Marshes, and in much smaller numbers in Scotland and western parts of England. In winter, breeding birds move south, and are replaced by an influx of continental birds from further north.

This dabbling duck is strongly migratory and winters further south than its breeding range (so far so that there have been four reports in Australia). It is not as gregarious as some dabbling ducks outside the breeding season and tends to form only small flocks.

Meet Penny, a 2-year-old rusty colored female calico cat. Penny was abandoned at Lollypop Farm with her sister, Honey. Honey has been adopted, and now Penny is patiently waiting to find her forever home.

This wonderful girl has expressive eyes and an out-going personality. She loved curling up with her sister, and can’t wait to be adopted so she has someone new to snuggle with. She weighs 8 pounds and has a beautiful soft coat.

Clymie is a quiet and reserved 8-year-old male black and white tuxedo cat. He weighs about 11 pound. Clymie came to Lollypop Farm because his previous owner was having problems.

You’ll most likely find him curled up inside his perch cubicle, but he’ll be sure to come out to say hello if you come for a visit. This super sweet boy has become a staff favorite. He’s a bit scared of strangers at first, but quickly turns into a love bug when showered with attention.

Approved adopters over the age of 60 can take Clymie home for free as part of our Seniors-for-Seniors Adoption Program. Please come soon, Clymie isn’t fond of shelter life and can’t wait to curl up in the comfort of his new forever home!

After an exhausting day of caring for the family, the sun is finally dropping low. The kids have been fed and well cared for, and are burning off the little bit of energy they have left quietly playing nearby. A tired mom curles up in a fresh bed (of mulch) to enjoy some much-deserved rest, shuts her eyes and lets out a big ol' yawn. Rest well mother - well done!

I liked this image because of the story it told, and also because it displays the mighty set of jaws this small creature has. An adult red fox typically weighs from 6 to 15 pounds, and based on this photographic evidence, apparently half of that is mouth and teeth!

Shustoke is a typical North Warwickshire red sandstone and brick village. St Cuthbert's church is almost entirely C14, and contains the tomb of Sir William Dugdale 1685 of Blyth Hall. The churchyard has a wonderful collection of ancient carved sandstone headstones.

Fox Stuffed Animal

While you might not think a fox stuffed animal is an 'appropriate' plush toy as compared to a teddy bear, you should look at it as an opportunity to teach a child about an often misunderstood animal. While it's true the fox has garnered itself a reputation for cunning and intelligence over the years, like all wild animals, it does what it can to survive. A fox stuffed animal is no different on that front, trying to gain your attention and eventual affection away from the more predictable and iconic soft toys found on the market.

Red foxes can be found living all over the world in habitats as diverse as forests, mountains, deserts, and even grasslands. They are also known to adapt very well to human environments such as urban areas and farms. The red fox is nothing if not resourceful and because of it, their reputation for being very crafty and smart is legendary.

The red fox is easily identified by its red fur coat and thick tail although they can also be golden in color, reddish-brown, silver, and even black. The fox's tail is an important part of its anatomy as like a cats tail, it helps them with their balance. Their tail (or brush as it is sometimes called), also acts as a blanket in cold weather to keep it warm and is used as a signal when they communicate with other foxes.

The fox is not very big in size weighing at most 24 pounds and sometimes as little as 6.5 pounds. They are solitary hunters that dine on rabbits, birds, rodents, and other small prey. Just like the diversity of their home, so is their diet; they will also eat fruit and vegetables, fish, frogs, and worms.

You might be surprised at how cute and cuddly a fox stuffed animal really is at first glance. Despite not your first choice of soft toy for your child, a fox stuffed animal is quite endearing given its abundance of soft, plush fur and huggable body.

Tiger Stuffed Animal

With so many different types of animals in the world to love from domestic to wild it's hard to pick just one to call your favorite. The same can be said about plush toys how it is possible to choose just one that is the most special of them all? When it comes to the animals in the wild, there can be little debate that tigers are pretty spectacular creatures. The same can be said about tigers in the world of plush toys; a really stunning tiger stuffed animal is hard to beat when it comes to soft toys. Some tiger stuffed animals are so beautiful in fact, it's hard to choose just one to take home.

On the Queensland coast of Australia is a place called Dreamworld, which is a theme park with a difference because its biggest attractions were once tiny bundles of fluff. In 1998, four baby Bengal tigers were born on Dreamworld's Tiger Island. It is with no surprise that these adorable cubs became instant celebrities and went on to be known as the Awesome Pawsome.

As one can imagine, hand-raising tiger cubs is no easy occupation. It literally requires a dedicated team of people working around the clock, because on Tiger Island, humans are the ones that take over from the cubs massive mother. By bonding with their handlers, the tigers are given a life free from behind the bars of a cage.

Fast forward ten years later and things are very different at Dreamworld on Tiger Island - the Awesome Pawsome are all grown up. The once cuddly cubs now weigh more than 300 pounds. They are armed with claws more than three inches long and have two and a half inch fangs the largest canine teeth of any carnivore on land. They can climb 15 foot tree trunks, leap 20 feet in the air, and run at speeds of more than 40 miles per hour. They are now Dreamworld's biggest stars. While all four tigers are incredibly impressive, there is only one that can be called awesome; weighing 470 pounds, Sultan is the biggest tiger in all of Australia and the indisputable king of Tiger Island.
Dreamworld hopes to have the same success today, raising tiger cubs by hand, as they did with the Awesome Pawsome ten years ago. This time, however, they are hopeful it will be with the incredibly rare Sumatran tiger. Breeding of a Sumatran tiger in captivity may be the species' last hope for survival.

While we can only ever dream to have an awesome pawsome of our own, a tiger stuffed animal will just have to suffice. And, given a tiger stuffed animal, in all its glory, it is truly a work of art in the soft toy world, and is just a little closer to having the real thing.
