Half the pigs were put into an environment in which they were given more space to roam and the freedom to both walk and play with 'pig' toys in fresh straw. The other half of the pigs were placed in a smaller area that contained no straw and just one interactive toy. A squeaky noise was then played to see how the pigs would respond.
The pigs living in the better environment took an optimistic approach to the sound they had never heard before and went on to approach it with the expectation they would get the treat (the apple).
The other pigs, living in the area which was not as pleasant, took the opposite approach and were wary of the noise thus did not attempt to come forward for the treat. The reactions of the pigs is similar to the way humans feel and will react when approached with something ambiguous. For example, if your boss calls you into your office on a day when you are feeling particularly stressed and out of sorts, you will likely conclude that you have done something wrong. On the other hand, if your day has been a positive one and you are called into the boss' office, you might think you will be greeted with praise and, even a raise.
The study done on the pigs is part of an ongoing project to understand quality of life for animals on a farm with the intent of improving animal welfare and animal lives in general. One of the United Kingdom's leading experts in pig welfare says the results of this latest study need to be further "refined and validated so it could be used to help scientists determine what is really important to the pig for its well-being."

Like cows, camels have three stomachs and do not chew their food; it is swallowed first, partially digested, and then chewed again later as cud.
During prehistoric times, it is believed that camels crossed over the Bering Strait to eventually evolve in North America. They eventually became domesticated and of the 500-700 camels living in the Gobi desert, only a small population is still wild. Today, domesticated camels only make their homes in Asia and Africa. At one time, some were introduced to Australia and as a result, there are still a few feral camels living in the wilds there. In the 1800s, an experiment was conducted in which camels were introduced to the North American desert, but it turned out to be unsuccessful.

Get Involved in Animal Welfare
I will be the first to tell you that that state of animal treatment in the United States and the world is poor at best. There are just too many bad cases and troubled situations for one person or one group to deal with. That is absolutely correct. Nothing will change without a movement. Action by ordinary people on the grassroots level. We cannot depend on government bureaucracy and underpaid law enforcement officials to take the lead on animal welfare issues.
We can all start very small. Start by making sure your friends and family are taking proper care of their animals. I never understood why people would adopt a dog then stick it in a tiny pen on the far corner of the property. Only to interact with the dog once a day to fill its bowl with food. We believe that pets are family! Both sides lose in these types of scenarios. The people do not get the full benefit of quality time and play with an unconditionally loving pet. The pet is doomed to live out its life in a cage purgatory where it gets only minimal social stimulation.
The next steps are to donate, volunteer, community awareness. Donate to your local no kill animal shelter, Spay/Neuter organizations, and the like. These organizations work diligently in your community everyday to make the lives of animals better. The real beneficiaries of these organizations are the people of the community. Sadly most do not receive any government funding. They rely solely on donations of people like you and me and the occasional grant.
Volunteer at a no kill animal shelter or other animal welfare organization. The only resource these places need more than money is volunteers. They need help taking dogs to adoption events on the weekends, walking dogs in the kennels so they become used to human contact and do not jump all over a perspective adopter because they are never let out of their pens.
They need help gathering evidence in animal abuse and neglect cases. Local law enforcement seldom acts. If they do it is almost always too late for the animals.The last and most important is awareness. Just keeping your eyes open to possible abuse cases. If you drive by a house with a dog in bad shape, contact the authorities and your local humane society. Talk to your friends about it. Awareness leads to education. The more we know the better we can be. We owe that to our furry friends. Contact us and tell us your ideas to help animals.
