African Grey Training

AFRICAN GREY TRAINING: 

The African Grey is an amazing bird and it is a well known fact that it is a curious and intelligent animal. Emotionally they have been compared to small children and toddlers.

If and when you decide to get an African Grey parrot, you must be prepared for a lot of challenges. One of these challenges will be the training. Training your African Grey is not only important but is crucial. You must stick to good training program that works for both you and your parrot.

The African Grey is able to speak and mimic a large number of words. They are able to learn more than 2000 words when trained properly. They can duplicate sounds such as bells, lawnmowers, kettles etc. You must be careful what you say around them as they will copy what you say. To avoid embarrassment stick to words that is relevant to the training process. Mimicking words means they are saying random words that you have taught them, however you can teach them to understand what they say with time and patience.

African Greys' are shy animals especially around strangers. It takes time and patience to teach them social skills that will help them become more confident. Social skills are vital for an emotionally healthy parrot.

New things should be introduced to them gradually so that they can adjust and get use to it. Remember your African Grey is skittish to new things. They are going to be a good addition to the family once they are comfortable within their surroundings. You will find that they are very affectionate and sociable.

I previously spoke about introducing new things to your African Grey gradually this also applies to people as well as their toys.

They love their toys and this provides with good stimulation. Things must be taken slowly and not too many things introduced at once.

If your African Grey is scared and very shy, you should use training methods that emphasis positive reinforcement. This will aid your relationship with your African Grey companion.

One very good training technique is of course the feeding training. Feeding them treats helps for them to adapt and adjust to various situations. To motivate and assist your bird with training find out what foods they like. Look at what they eat first at feeding time and what they eat last. It is like dessert after dinner, they will work harder for the treat they like more.

By making your training session more playful will ensure that the time spent with your African Grey is more fun and interesting. Make sure to put enough time aside to spend time with your African Grey to train him.

Let them get use to your voice by speaking to them on a continuous basis while they are still in their cage. Just like people every bird has its own personality and through enough experimentation you will soon realize what works best for both you and your African Grey.

Another very effective training is called the "Clicker training". What this basically is in a nutshell: Every time you bring in a new toy. Place the toy in the same room as them and every time they look at the toy, you click and reward them. Continue to do this every day and bring the toy closer towards them. Keep at it until they are no longer scared of the toy and begin to play with it.

This method can be used when introducing people to a very shy African Grey. And as always be patient with your parrot. In time your parrot will learn to trust your judgment will feel comfortable with the people you are comfortable with. For more info visit the blog site African Grey Training.

Meet the African Gorillas

Gorillas are natives of Central Africa. They are the largest living primates and they live in deep forests. They are divided into two species namely the Mountain Gorilla and the Lowland Gorillas. Their DNA highly resembles that of the humans and they are the next closest living relative to humans after the Chimpanzees. The Mountain species lives in the Albertine Rift a cloud forest in Virunga Volcanoes. The Lowland species lives in dense forests of the Central West African countries and east parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gorillas have varying weights and heights depending on their sex. Adult males have a height of 1.65 to 1.75 meters and they weigh between 140-200kg. Adult females have a height of 1.4 meters and weigh around 100kg. Some species in the world have recorded a height of 1.8 meters and over 200kg. The animals are usually dark in color. The Mountain species is the darkest of all and also has the thickest hair.  The Western Lowland one is sometimes brown or grayish and usually has a reddish forehead. This type appears slender and agile than the former.

Gorillas are herbivores and will eat anything from wild fruits, leaves and new plants. Sometimes they feed on small insects like termites and ants. The animals spend most of their day eating. They have strong canines that allow them to crush hard plants like the bamboos. The Lowland species feed mainly on fruits while the Mountain ones mainly eat roots, stems and herbs. The animals are highly intelligent and can make and use tools just like the Chimpanzees. They are believed to be very emotional and they have spiritual feelings like humans.

The West African Giraffe

West African Giraffe is also called Niger Giraffe or Nigerien Giraffe. It's a sub-species of giraffe and is found on the Sahel regions of West Africa. It's distinguished by its light colored spots unlike the other which have deep reddish spots. The giraffe's population used to be very high in countries like Senegal and Cameroon but today the y have greatly reduced to less than 200 hundred. The best sustaining of their herd can be sound in Southwest Niger.

West Africa Giraffes have reduced greatly due the encroachment by humans. Their areas of habitat have been occupied by farmers and also affected by dramatic droughts that docked the areas during 1800s. There have been a lot of conservation efforts since the 1990s. This has led to a great increase in their size. The numbers have increased from a low of 50 animals to around 175 as of 2007 reports. These efforts are being done by the Niger government in the northern part of Dosso Partial Faunal Reserve.

West Africa Giraffes migrates seasonally to the drier highlands of Dallol Bosso Valley around 80kilometres during the dry season. They migrate to an area named as Niamey. It's through this area that the government is able to monitor their movements. Here smooth relations between the farmers and the herd are encouraged in order to provide grounds for tourism. The animal can be observed around this area though organized tours. The area habitat is known as Tiger Bush and allow bands of trees to thrive therefore providing the animals with their diet.

African tribal drums are the perfect item to own not only for playing, but also as decoration. In Africa the drum plays a huge part in the culture, and ceremonies that the villages often perform. There are many different varieties of African drums, and they all have a different meaning, and purpose. The low base noise that the Udu creates is fantastic, and has been developed for different musical styles today.

The Darbuka drum is a goblet shaped hand drum that is often used in musical festivals, and celebrations. These African tribal drums have very thin, distinctive drum heads, and create a distinctive crisp sound. This style of African drums are very old, and were originally made from clay, however, today they are often seen in synthetic materials.

The Darbuka is played in a very light motion with quick strokes. It is often placed between the players knees enabling them to use both hands freely.

An Ashiko drum is a very unusual shape that can be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The Ashiko is the male version of the Djembe drum. These styles of African drums create three very distinctive tones. When professionally played they sound amazing, and can help to set the mood for a ceremony or festival. The unique cone shape of these African tribal drums helps to propel the sound that they create.

The uniquely named Djun djun drum is the collective name for the African tribal drums developed in the Mande drum ensemble. These African drums range in size, and can be found in very large varieties. Depending on the size and structure of the drum will determine exactly what name the African tribal drums are given. There are two main styles of this drum, and they are often played in very different ways.

Ngoma drums are used by the Bantu speaking people of South Africa, and are used for the percussion of different dances, and special occasions. This style of African tribal drums is used to display authority as well as for a musical instrument. They are made traditionally from wood, and have animal skin covering both ends. Typically you will find them being played in groups of seven to create an amazing sound.

African Drums Origins Explained

African drums have been around for centuries and have been a cultural part of the African tribes when it comes to their ceremonial gatherings. These various different types' of drums are also used to stir and call upon the ancestors.

Drums are also frequently used by other tribal peoples such as the Native American, Incas, and Aztecs etc. and there are a variety of different drums such as the djembe drum and talking drums as well as dunun.

The djembe originated from West Africa and often has a metal sheet included for the purpose of amplification. This drum is made from goat skin and the drum structure is shaped similar to a large goblet and is played with a person's hands only. The djembe is also known as yembe and sanbanyi. Many different tones can be produced due to the shape of the drum as well as the goat skin.

When playing an African drum slapping the skin closest to the rim will produce a tone and if you slap the center of the drum it will produce a bass sound. The different tones of the African drums will depend on the different techniques used. Striking produces a tone and slapping produces a high pitch. In addition there are tribes such as the Aborigines that make use of a Didgeridoo in addition to the drums, which has now become a popular instrument among westerners.The drums of Africa also have been categorized into genders such a male and female. The djembe for instance is also said to retain three spirits. The head of the drum represents the spirit of the animal, then the drum also contains the spirit of the maker, and the base of the drum is the spirit of the tree and has been termed as a magical drum. In addition the dunun is made from cow hide or goat hide and the base of the drum is made from wood shell.

The African Drums nowadays are far more advanced and are made from PVC, fiberglass or metal.

The heads of the drums are still made from animal skins, but really do not produce the same sound as the handmade traditional drums which come from the Mali or Manding Empire of West Africa which date back to 1247 and 1600.

A medieval West African tribe known as the Manden Kurufa constructed the djembe which is still used today by the tribe as well as westerners.

African Safaris

The African Safari is a tradition which goes back many years. The word safari has its root in the Arabic word safar which roughly translated means to make a journey. This was then borrowed into Swahili as safari and simply cane to mean to travel. In its original context a safari would refer to any kind of travel and was often used in the context of travelling long trade routes. The modern connotations of khaki shorts, pith helmets and great adventure only came later.

The earliest African safaris were therefore not relaxing holidays but where in fact trading operations. The Arabic and African cultures established great trade routes between them on which large caravans of traders would travel across vast distances to trade their wares. The rich resources of Africa meant that many profitable and highly prized objects were traded throughout Africa on those early African safaris.

As colonisation began European trade caravans quickly joined in on a large scale. European safari caravans were generally very large and required huge numbers of staff to crew them and vast amounts of supplies to sustain them. Some of the routes they travelled became known to be particularly treacherous and required very careful and skilful navigation and bartering to get through safely. This was particularly true as they began to trade increasingly in slaves as well as other precious materials.

It was only with the ending of the slave trade that the purpose of African safaris shifted from one of trade and commerce to one of adventure and exploration. it was at this point that naturalists and explorers such as William John Burchell and Gustav Fischer redefined what it meant to go on safari. They went on exploratory travels throughout Africa identifying and cataloguing new animals that they encountered.

It was also at this time that African safaris became known for another popular pursuit, namely hunting. African safaris soon became synonymous with hunting trips with many enthusiastic hunters travelling to Africa in the hopes of bagging the most impressive trophies.

It was this era of African safaris that gave us the connotation of adventure and exploration that are still associated with safaris today. Ironically we also have these early hunters to thank for much of the conservation movement concerned with African wildlife today. This is because many of the great hunters kept great records of their time in Africa. Their stories, writings, drawings and paintings crated a greater awareness of Africa igniting the idea of conserving it for generations to come.

Nowadays African safaris are simply considered a luxury holiday option. While they might still be associated with adventure most of the wildlife shooting is done with cameras and the treacherous travelling by trade caravan has been replaced with landrovers. The modern African safari involves game drives and walking tours, cocktails at sunset and catered meals under the African stars. But if you long for the iconic African safaris of yesteryear do not despair, for while the pith helmets might be in short supply the khaki shorts still abound.
